Adani Power Ltd., India’s largest private-sector thermal power producer, has won a major bid to supply 1,500 MW (net) of thermal power to Uttar Pradesh. The power will be generated from a new 2×800 MW Ultra-Supercritical greenfield plant, to be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model.
Lowest Tariff Among Competitors
In a fiercely competitive auction, Adani Power emerged as the lowest bidder with a tariff of ₹5.383 per unit, making it one of the most cost-efficient offerings in recent times for the state.
Following the recent cabinet approval from the Uttar Pradesh government, the company is set to sign a long-term Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (UPPCL). The Letter of Award (LoA) was issued on May 10, 2025.
Targeting FY30 Commissioning:
Adani Power aims to commence power supply by FY30, with the project requiring an estimated investment of $2 billion (approximately ₹16,600 crore).
“This project reinforces our commitment to supporting Uttar Pradesh’s growing energy needs with reliable and cleaner thermal power. Our advanced Ultra-Supercritical technology will ensure higher efficiency and lower emissions,” said S.B. Khyalia, CEO of Adani Power.
The construction phase is projected to create 8,000–9,000 direct and indirect jobs, while around 2,000 jobs are expected during the operational phase, contributing significantly to the local economy.
Future Outlook:
With rapid industrialization and urban growth, Uttar Pradesh’s thermal power demand is expected to rise by 11,000 MW over the next decade. The 1,500 MW allocation to Adani Power is part of the government’s broader strategy to meet this surge in demand through long-term power procurement.
This marks Adani Power’s second major PSA win within a year, following the 6,600 MW (1,600 MW thermal + 5,000 MW solar) allocation from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (MSEDCL) in September 2024, which has already been converted into a long-term PSA.
About Adani Power:
Adani Power Ltd. (APL), part of the Adani portfolio, is India’s leading private-sector thermal power generator, with an installed capacity of 17,510 MW across multiple states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and more. The company is actively pursuing technological innovation and infrastructure growth to support India’s vision of becoming a power-surplus nation.
