Mumbai, Oct 24: Indian equity markets suffered a broad-based and punishing sell-off during the week ended Friday, 23 October 2026, as a relentless surge in crude oil prices to a five-month high, persistent foreign institutional selling and a sharp deterioration in the broader market overwhelmed positive cues from select index heavyweights, a blockbuster initial public offering and firm domestic macroeconomic data.
The BSE Sensex fell 1,575 points during the week, while the NSE Nifty 50 lost 2.4%, closing at 73,123.83 and 22,600 respectively. The sell-off erased approximately ₹16.1 lakh crore in market value from BSE-listed companies, with total market capitalisation falling from ₹4,67,93,267.82 crore on Monday, 19 October, to ₹4,51,83,393.14 crore by Friday.
The broader market suffered far greater damage than the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap 100 plunging 5.6% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 crashing over 7%, marking the smallcap index’s worst weekly performance in 20 months.
Weekly Overview: How Crude at $114 and a Rupee Near 95 Broke the Market’s Back
The dominant trigger for the week’s equity rout was the relentless climb in crude oil prices. Brent crude futures surged to approximately $114 per barrel amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East following attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure by Yemen-based Houthi forces, with Saudi Aramco ordering the evacuation of its Dhahran headquarters on Thursday, 22 October.
Elevated crude prices directly threaten India’s import bill, inflation trajectory and corporate margins, particularly for oil marketing companies, paints, tyres and aviation firms. The rupee compounded the pressure, weakening past 94.94 against the US dollar as higher crude prices and a stronger dollar exerted pressure on emerging-market currencies. The combined effect of expensive crude and a weak rupee created a vicious cycle for domestic equities, with foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remaining net sellers in 12 of the 14 trading sessions in October, taking the month’s cumulative outflow to approximately ₹52,353 crore.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided buying support of ₹2,891 crore on Thursday, 22 October alone, but their absorption of foreign selling was insufficient to prevent the benchmarks from closing deep in the red. Market breadth deteriorated sharply, with the advance-decline ratio on the NSE collapsing as declining stocks overwhelmed advancing shares.
Major Benchmark Indices: Nifty, Sensex and Next 50 in Numbers
The BSE Sensex opened the week under pressure and never recovered, closing at 73,123.83 on Friday, down 1,252.15 points, or 1.68%, from its previous week’s close of 74,376. The index touched a weekly high of approximately 74,200 on Monday, 19 October, before the selling intensified, and a weekly low near 72,450 on Thursday, 22 October, giving it a trading range of roughly 1,750 points.
The Nifty 50 mirrored the weakness, closing at 22,600, down 384 points, or 1.67%, from its previous close of 22,984. The index hit a weekly high near 22,950 on Monday and a low of approximately 22,350 on Thursday, a trading range of about 600 points. The Nifty Next 50 declined 2.26% for the week, with the index closing at 65,810.35, reflecting the broader aversion to risk outside the top-tier benchmark.
Stocks that contributed significantly to the Sensex’s fall included Shriram Finance (down 4%), Adani Enterprises (down 3%), JSW Steel (down 3.2%), Tata Steel (down 4.51%) and Adani Ports (down 3.13%), while Eternal (up 3.99%), Apollo Hospitals (up 2.5%), Asian Paints (up 1.8%) and TCS provided marginal support.
Broad Market Indices: Midcaps and Smallcaps Post Worst Week in 20 Months
The damage outside the headline indices was significantly deeper. The Nifty Smallcap 250 index fell approximately 8% for the week, while the Nifty Midcap 100 dropped 5.6%, with both segments posting their worst weekly performance in 20 months. The Nifty Midcap 150 lost 2.21% on Friday alone, while the Nifty Smallcap 250 dropped 2.79% in the final session, capping a week of relentless selling pressure in the broader market. The BSE 150 Midcap index fell 2.10% and the BSE 250 SmallCap index declined 2.68% on Friday.
The advance-decline ratio confirmed that the decline was broad-based rather than concentrated in a few heavyweights, with declining stocks outnumbering advancing shares by a wide margin. The breadth data suggested that investors were not rotating from large caps into smaller companies but rather withdrawing from the market altogether, with the midcap and smallcap segments bearing the brunt of the selling pressure as liquidity tightened and risk appetite collapsed.
Sectoral Indices: Chemicals Down 7.2%, Consumer Durables 6.4%, IT the Sole Survivor
The sectoral performance painted a picture of widespread destruction, with only the Nifty IT index managing to end the week in positive territory, rising 0.2% to 31,995.50. The Nifty Chemicals index was the worst-performing sectoral gauge, plummeting 7.2% to 26,325 from 28,364.25 at the beginning of the week, shedding 2,039.3 points.
The Nifty Consumer Durables index was the second-worst performer, dropping 6.4% to 33,922 from 36,247.95, losing 2,325.9 points. The Nifty Metal index declined 2.71% on Friday and 5.4% for the week, the Nifty Realty index fell 2.38% on Friday and 5% for the week, and the Nifty PSU Bank index dropped 2.26% on Friday, reflecting the severe stress in economically sensitive sectors. Financial stocks were not immune, with the Nifty Bank index losing 2.78% for the week to close at 54,287.35, down 638 points on Friday alone, and the Nifty Financial Services index declining 1.03% on Friday. The Nifty FMCG index fell 1.46% and the Nifty Pharma index declined 1.46% on Friday, while the Nifty Auto index lost 0.90%.
The Nifty IT index’s outperformance was driven by strong quarterly earnings and a weaker rupee that boosts the profitability of export-oriented software services firms, with Wipro surging 9.07%, Tech Mahindra gaining 8.48%, TCS rising 7.66% and HCL Technologies adding 4.57% during the week.
India VIX at 16.77: The 6.47% Spike That Signalled Fear Was Repricing
India VIX, the market’s fear gauge, spiked 6.47% to close at 16.77 on Friday, 23 October, up 1.02 points from its previous close of 15.76. The volatility index opened the week near 14.06, its level at the end of the prior week, and climbed steadily as crude oil prices surged and equity benchmarks extended their losses.
The VIX’s move above 16 coincided with the Nifty’s fourth consecutive session of losses on Friday, and the inverse relationship between the two indices held throughout the week, with every leg lower in the Nifty accompanied by a corresponding spike in volatility. The VIX’s intraday high of 17.09 was touched on Friday, 23 October, when Brent crude crossed $114 per barrel and the rupee weakened past 94.90, and the index remained elevated into the weekend, suggesting that near-term volatility was expected to persist.
The VIX’s 52-week range stood at 8.72 to 28.90, and its rise to 16.77 reflected growing nervousness about energy supply disruptions, global technology valuations and domestic equity outflows.
FIIs Sell ₹3,459 Crore on Thursday; DIIs Buy ₹2,891 Crore as October Outflows Top ₹52,000 Crore
Institutional flows told a story of persistent foreign risk aversion offset by domestic buying support. On Monday, 19 October, FIIs net sold equities worth ₹1,148 crore, while DIIs purchased ₹3,200 crore. On Thursday, 22 October, FIIs returned to selling, offloading ₹3,458.70 crore, while DIIs bought ₹2,891.32 crore.
The latest outflow took October’s cumulative FII selling to approximately ₹52,353 crore, with FIIs having been net sellers in 12 of the 14 trading sessions during the month. The two net-buying sessions were 16 October and 21 October, when FIIs bought ₹1,022.32 crore, and the largest single-day outflow was ₹12,943.58 crore on 8 October. DIIs, by contrast, were net buyers in 13 of the 14 sessions, with cumulative buying of about ₹55,875 crore, equal to roughly 107% of FII selling for the month.
The combined net flow for October remained positive at about ₹3,522 crore, but the persistent foreign selling continued to weigh on sentiment and liquidity. On a year-to-date basis, FIIs have sold a net ₹4.57 lakh crore, while DIIs have bought ₹6.93 lakh crore.
Wipro Surges 9.07%, TCS 7.66%; Swiggy Crashes 14% Post-Q2 Results
Stock-specific action during the week reflected a mix of earnings-driven moves and broader risk aversion. Among the top weekly gainers, Wipro surged 9.07%, Tech Mahindra gained 8.48%, TCS rose 7.66%, Punjab National Bank added 4.62% and HCL Technologies gained 4.57%. L&T Technology Services surged nearly 15% on Wednesday, 21 October, posting its biggest single-day gain in five years after its second-quarter earnings beat analyst estimates.

On the losing side, Swiggy crashed 14% on Friday, 23 October after its Q2 results showed a net loss of ₹922 crore, while Ola Electric dipped 5% after a Goldman Sachs downgrade to sell. Hindustan Zinc shares fell 3% on Wednesday, 21 October post-Q2 results despite reporting a 142% surge in net profit to ₹6,412 crore, as analysts maintained a neutral rating.
UltraTech Cement’s 21% Profit Rise and Hindustan Zinc’s 142% Surge: Earnings That Beat the Gloom
The Q2 FY27 earnings season gathered pace during the week, with several major companies reporting results that moved their stocks. UltraTech Cement reported a 21% rise in consolidated net profit, with net sales up 19% to ₹23,024 crore, driven by a 13% increase in cement sales volumes as capacity utilisation improved. Hindustan Zinc posted a 142% surge in net profit to ₹6,412 crore, driven by stronger metal prices, higher production and a 29% fall in zinc costs, though the stock fell 3% post-results as analysts maintained a neutral rating.
Eternal (formerly Zomato) reported a 92.3% year-on-year jump in Q2 FY27 profit to ₹125 crore, though it missed the CNBC-TV18 poll estimate of ₹250 crore, with revenue surging 77.6% to ₹24,000 crore. Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services reported a 55% rise in net profit to ₹882 crore in Q2 FY27 from ₹569 crore a year ago. Colgate-Palmolive (India) reported a 4.29% rise in standalone net profit to ₹341.57 crore with net sales up 12.26% to ₹1,705.79 crore.
Godrej Properties was a notable disappointment, with net profit falling 62% year-on-year to ₹154 crore despite revenue rising to ₹1,935 crore, and its stock fell over 4.4%. Swiggy’s net loss narrowed to ₹922 crore from ₹1,092 crore a year earlier, with net sales jumping 36.14% to ₹7,571 crore, but the stock still crashed 14% on Friday.
Jio Platforms’ ₹30,213 Crore IPO Subscribed 12.55 Times, Drains Liquidity from Secondary Market
The week’s biggest capital-market event was the initial public offering of Reliance Industries’ telecom and digital arm, Jio Platforms, which opened for subscription on Wednesday, 21 October and closed on Friday, 23 October at a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share.
The ₹30,213 crore issue, which had no offer-for-sale component, was subscribed 12.55 times overall by 3:00 PM on 23 October, with the qualified institutional buyer portion subscribed 32.77 times and the non-institutional investor portion 13.38 times. The minimum lot size was 12 shares, and the listing is scheduled for 28 October on both the BSE and NSE.
The IPO values Jio Platforms at up to $108.3 billion, potentially making it one of India’s biggest companies by market capitalisation when trading starts. The massive IPO drained liquidity from the secondary market during the week, with the Sensex losing over 1,000 points from its intraday high on Friday as investors redirected funds towards the primary issue.
RBI MPC Minutes Signal Further Rate Hikes; Repo Rate at 5.50% with 5.2% CPI Forecast
The Reserve Bank of India’s October Monetary Policy Committee minutes, released on Wednesday, 21 October, revealed that all six members voted unanimously to raise the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% at the 5-7 October meeting. The committee raised its FY27 Consumer Price Index inflation forecast to 5.2% from 5.0% and its GDP growth forecast to 7.1% from 6.7%.

Governor Sanjay Malhotra warned that inflation was becoming more widespread across goods and services, noting that 37% of items in the CPI basket recorded inflation above 4% in August, compared with 20% in March, and that core inflation rose from 3.9% in July to 4.2% in August. The RBI now projects average inflation of 5.2% for FY2026-27, with inflation reaching 6% in the October-December quarter and remaining elevated at 5.7% in the following quarter.
The hawkish minutes indicated that further interest-rate increases may be necessary to contain rising inflation, which kept bond yields elevated and added to the risk-off sentiment in equities. India’s CPI inflation stood at 5.54% in September, up from 4.83% in August, while the trade deficit widened to $30.21 billion from $26.86 billion in August, with exports jumping 23% to $44.4 billion and imports growing 8% to $74.61 billion.
HSBC Flash PMI at 56.7 and 8% IIP Growth: The Positive Data the Market Chose to Ignore
On the macroeconomic front, the HSBC Flash India Composite PMI Output Index rose to 56.7 in October from 55.9 in September, signalling the fastest business activity expansion since June, supported by stronger new orders and easing inflationary pressures. The services PMI rose to 56.2 from 55.2, while the manufacturing PMI ticked down to 54.9 from 55.1 as hiring slowed. Industrial output had risen to 8.0% in August from 6.7% in July, and gross GST collections stood at ₹2.03 lakh crore in September, up from ₹1.99 lakh crore in August. The positive data, however, was largely ignored by the markets, which remained focused on crude oil and geopolitical risks.
US 10-Year Yield Below 5% and Dollar Near 101.70: Global Cues Offered Little Respite
Globally, the US 10-year Treasury yield dipped below 5% for the first time in a month as investors flocked to government bonds as safe havens amid the global equity sell-off, while the dollar index hovered near 101.70. The probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October had dropped to just 7%, while a quarter-point increase was not fully priced in for December, reflecting the market’s reassessment of the rate path amid the risk-off sentiment.
The technology-led sell-off in the US saw the Nasdaq Composite fall 2.60% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index drop 6.7% on Thursday, 22 October, ahead of the Indian trading session, providing a negative backdrop for global equity markets. Asian markets were mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei falling 1.72% and South Korea’s KOSPI dropping 2.01%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.49%. European markets also closed lower, with the CAC 40 down 2.34% and the DAX down 1.19%.
Monitor Brent crude above $114 per barrel and the USD/INR trajectory near 94.94 as the primary near-term determinants of Indian equity direction, given their direct impact on inflation, corporate margins and foreign flows. The 28 October Jio Platforms listing and the 27-28 October FOMC meeting are the next scheduled catalysts, while the RBI’s hawkish minutes signal that domestic rate-sensitive sectors face a higher-for-longer cost of capital. Track FII selling patterns and Q2 earnings delivery for cues on whether the market can stabilise near the 22,400-22,500 Nifty support zone.
