Mumbai, October 9: Oil prices declined on Friday, October 9, as US President Donald Trump’s comments on diplomatic efforts with Iran eased concerns over potential supply disruptions in the Middle East. Brent crude futures fell 1% to $103.2 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures dropped 0.9% to $90.6 per barrel. However, crude prices remained elevated amid persistent geopolitical risks, attacks on oil shipments and production disruptions in the Gulf of Mexico. Brent was also on track to register a weekly gain following a sharp rally in the previous session.

Crude Oil Prices Ease After Trump’s Comments On Iran

Oil prices retreated after Trump said Washington was engaged in productive discussions with Iran and would not launch an attack before the November 3 US midterm elections. His comments offered some relief to energy markets, which have been grappling with uncertainty over the course of the conflict and its implications for global crude supplies.

The remarks came after media reports suggested that Washington was considering military action against Iran before the elections. Trump’s statement helped temper immediate fears of a further escalation, although the diplomatic outlook remained uncertain.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported on Thursday that Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi had said Tehran was reviewing the US response to an Iranian proposal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. Any progress towards restoring shipping through the strategic waterway could ease supply concerns and reduce the geopolitical premium embedded in oil prices.

The conflict, now in its eighth month, has kept energy markets volatile, with traders closely monitoring diplomatic developments and the risk of further disruption to oil shipments.

Strait Of Hormuz Remains Key To Global Oil Supply

The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the global oil market outlook. Before the conflict, the narrow waterway handled shipments equivalent to around 20% of global oil and fuel supplies, making any disruption a significant risk for energy-importing economies.

Concerns over shipping through the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz intensified in October following attacks on vessels carrying crude oil from the Middle East. These developments helped push Brent crude prices more than 4% higher on Thursday, even as markets continued to assess the prospects of diplomatic progress.

The US, meanwhile, maintained economic pressure on Iran. Washington imposed fresh sanctions on Thursday targeting individuals, networks and 17 vessels accused of transporting Iranian crude oil, petroleum products and petrochemicals.

The sanctions add another layer of uncertainty to the supply outlook, as traders weigh the possibility of easing geopolitical tensions against the risk of restrictions and disruptions continuing to constrain flows from the region.

Hurricane Disrupts US Oil Production

Supply concerns are not limited to the Middle East. The global oil market is also assessing the impact of Hurricane Isaias as it approaches the Gulf of Mexico coast in the United States, the world’s largest oil producer.

According to US government data cited by Reuters, producers had shut in around 1.3 million barrels per day of oil production in the region as of Thursday. This represented 62.9% of current Gulf of Mexico output.

The production shutdowns have provided some support to prices by restricting available supply, even as expectations of diplomatic progress between Washington and Tehran weighed on crude futures.

The competing forces of geopolitical risk, weather-related disruptions and the possibility of renewed oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz are likely to keep prices volatile in the near term.

Brent Heads For Weekly Gain Despite Friday’s Decline

Despite Friday’s retreat, Brent crude remained on track for a weekly gain after its more than 4% advance on Thursday. The benchmark has drawn support from renewed concerns over attacks on oil shipments from the Middle East earlier in the week.

WTI, by contrast, was headed for a slight weekly decline, even with production disruptions caused by the approaching hurricane.

The contrasting performance of the two benchmarks reflects differences in their exposure to supply risks, with Brent particularly sensitive to developments affecting internationally traded crude and Middle Eastern exports.

What Lower Oil Prices Mean For India

For India, which relies heavily on imported crude oil to meet its energy requirements, a sustained decline in international prices could ease pressure on the import bill, inflation and the rupee. Lower crude prices can also reduce input costs for sectors such as aviation, paints and other fuel-intensive industries.

However, Brent crude at around $103.2 per barrel remains elevated, limiting the relief available to oil-importing economies. A renewed escalation in the Middle East, continued disruption to shipping or prolonged production shutdowns in the Gulf of Mexico could push prices higher again.

Investors will therefore track developments in US-Iran negotiations, the status of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and changes in global oil production for further direction.
