Mumbai, Aug 27: The monthly futures and options (F&O) contracts linked to the BSE Sensex, BSE Bankex and BSE Focused IT Index are scheduled to expire today. The expiry falls on the last Thursday of August, in line with the monthly expiry schedule for these BSE index derivatives.
The expiry comes as Indian equities have seen increased price swings around derivatives positioning and rollovers this week. Reuters reported that expiry-related rollovers and positioning contributed to sharper-than-usual movements, particularly during the final hour of trading on August 25.
August 27 Expiry Brings Three BSE Index Derivatives into Focus
The Sensex, Bankex and Focused IT Index monthly futures and options contracts are set to reach expiry on August 27. The three indices cover different segments of the equity market. The Sensex is BSE’s flagship benchmark, while the Bankex represents the banking sector. The BSE Focused IT Index provides concentrated exposure to leading companies in the information technology sector.
BSE’s Focused IT Index comprises 14 companies selected from the BSE 500’s Information Technology segment based on free-float market capitalisation. The index includes major technology names such as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Wipro and Tech Mahindra, along with other companies from the IT sector.
Focused IT F&O: May 11 Launch Added a Dedicated IT-Sector Derivative
BSE introduced futures and options contracts on the BSE Focused IT Index (FOCIT) on May 11, 2026, giving market participants a listed derivative instrument linked specifically to the technology-sector index. BSE’s own materials describe the underlying index as comprising 14 companies.
The product recorded ₹148 crore in turnover on its debut trading day, with 172 members participating, according to reports on the launch.
The Focused IT derivatives therefore enter their August monthly expiry after several months of trading, making the August 27 expiry the latest scheduled settlement point for the product’s August series.
Expiry Mechanics: Focused IT Contracts Follow the Monthly Cycle
The Focused IT futures and options contracts are part of BSE’s monthly index derivatives offering. The contracts follow an expiry cycle based on the last Thursday of the expiry month.
The Focused IT contracts are cash-settled, meaning settlement is made financially rather than through delivery of the underlying shares. Market participants with expiring positions will therefore need to account for the applicable exchange settlement terms as the August series reaches its expiry date.
As the expiry approaches, open interest, trading volumes, option premiums and movements in the underlying indices remain relevant market indicators. Expiry-related positioning can also contribute to sharper price movements, as seen in the broader Indian derivatives market this week.
Market Context: Expiry Comes Amid Sharper Derivatives-Related Price Swings
The August 27 BSE expiry takes place against a market backdrop in which derivatives positioning has been contributing to intraday volatility. On August 25, Reuters reported that monthly expiry-related rollovers and positioning led to sharper-than-usual price swings in Indian equities, particularly during the final trading hour.
On the same day, the BSE Sensex gained 0.37% to close at 77,656.09, while the Nifty rose 0.48%. The IT sector also recovered during the session, with the relevant sectoral index gaining 0.6%, according to Reuters.
The broader market backdrop provides context for Thursday’s expiry, while the actual movement of the Sensex, Bankex and Focused IT Index will depend on market conditions and positioning during the session.
August 27 Marks the Monthly Expiry for Key BSE Index Derivatives
The key points ahead of Thursday’s session are:
- August 27, 2026 is the scheduled monthly expiry for the relevant BSE Sensex, Bankex and Focused IT index derivative contracts.
- The BSE Focused IT Index has 14 constituents drawn from the BSE 500’s Information Technology segment.
- Focused IT futures and options were introduced on May 11, 2026.
- The Focused IT contracts are cash-settled.
- The August expiry comes amid increased attention to derivatives positioning and rollover activity in Indian markets.
The August 27 session will consequently mark the scheduled monthly expiry of BSE’s Sensex, Bankex and Focused IT index derivatives, bringing broad-market, banking and technology-sector contracts to the end of their August series.
