Mumbai, June 25: Indian equity markets will remain closed on Friday, on account of Muharram, as both the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) observe the gazetted public holiday. The closure covers the equity, equity derivatives, and currency derivative segments on both exchanges, with no trading activity taking place through the day. Investors and traders will have to wait until Monday, June 29, when normal market operations resume.
Muharram marks the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is among the most sacred periods in Islam. The holiday specifically observes Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, which holds deep religious significance across Muslim communities. For Sunni Muslims, Ashura commemorates the day God saved Prophet Musa and the Israelites; for Shia Muslims, it marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Since the Islamic calendar is based on moon sighting, the date of Muharram is confirmed after the official sighting of the crescent moon, which placed Ashura on June 26 this year.
As per the official 2026 trading holiday calendar notified by BSE, Muharram falls as the tenth listed holiday of the calendar year, out of a total of 16 scheduled trading holidays for the Equity Segment and Equity Derivative Segment. With Friday’s closure followed by the weekend, market participants will effectively have a three-day break before the next trading session on Monday.
The Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) will observe a partial closure, remaining shut during its morning session from 9 am to 5 pm, but will reopen for its evening session from 5 pm to 11:30/11:55 pm. Banks across most Indian cities will also remain closed on June 26, with the exception of select state capitals, including Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, and a few others.
