Indian equity benchmarks ended lower on February 12, extending their recent weakness. The BSE Sensex declined 558.72 points, or 0.66%, to settle at 83,674.92, down from its previous close of 84,233.64. The Nifty 50 also finished in the red, slipping 146.65 points, or 0.57%, to close at 25,807.20 against its earlier close of 25,953.85, according to exchange data recorded at 3:30 pm IST.
Selling pressure intensified in the latter half of the session, keeping both indices below their intraday peaks and firmly in negative territory by the closing bell.
What Drove the Market Down?
The decline reflected broad-based weakness across frontline stocks, with both indices trading lower for most of the session. The Sensex opened at 83,968.43 and briefly touched an intraday high of 84,061.62 before slipping to a day’s low of 83,516.67.
The Nifty 50 followed a similar trajectory, opening at 25,906.70, which also marked its session high, before falling to an intraday low of 25,752.40.
The biggest drag on the market was a sharp sell‑off in information technology (IT) shares. Companies such as Infosys, TCS, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies and Wipro were among the major losers, which pulled the indices down. Also, weak cues from global markets, including U.S. tech shares and broader global tech sell‑offs, helped create a risk‑off mood among investors.
Most other sectors except consumer durables also ended in the red, including oil & gas, media, and realty, which shows the sell‑off wasn’t limited to just one segment. Mid‑cap and small‑cap indices also fell, indicating broad market weakness rather than a narrowly confined drop
The benchmarks had already ended lower in the previous session, and the absence of any strong positive catalyst during trading hours appeared to sustain the downward momentum.
