Mumbai, December 17, 2025: Canara Bank Ltd (NSE: CANBK) shares skyrocketed more than 2% on high volumes during intraday trade, outperforming the broader market on Wednesday, while the benchmark indices were trading in a subdued range. The stock moved higher alon͏gside selective strength i͏n public͏ sector banks, supported by ͏fresh developme͏nts around senior le͏a͏dersh͏ip and he͏ightened ma͏rket activi͏ty.͏ ͏

Canara Bank Jumps 2.06% as Volumes Surge Past 1.52 cr Shares

On 17 December 2025, Canara Bank share price closed at ₹150.20 on the NSE, up by ₹3.03 or 2.06%. The day’s high and low was ₹150.78 and ₹146.91 respectively while the day’s opening price was ₹147.00. Market cap was at ₹ 1.36 crore with P/E of 7.86.

The trading sentiment continued to be strong as the stock witnessed a turnover of more than 1.52 crore shares, amounting to a value of over ₹227 crore, on the day. Its 52-week low is ₹78.60 and 52-week high is ₹154.21, and the stock was trading near its 52-week high. 

Leadership Change in PSU Banks Acts as Immediate Market Trigger

Market focus was on the development of top management appointments in the public sector banks. It was reported that the first time, six private sector candidates have applied for the post of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Canara Bank, suggesting ongoing process of selection under the public sector banking structure. 

PSU Banking Index Stays in Green, Despite Broader Market Weakness 

In intraday trade, Nifty PSU Bank index gained close to 1% and was outperforming Nifty 50, which was trading lower at the same time. Canara Bank was among the best performers in the PSU banking pack, backed by liquidity-driven trades and nearness to the recent highs.

Selective buying rather than broad-based strength was seen in the day’s trading in the bigger sectors with public sector banks attracting more attention in an otherwise cautious market mood.
