Euro Zone Consumer Confidence Data For May Due Today

Euro zone consumer confidence data for May will come today, 20th May 2025, later in the day. This data will give an idea of the level of optimism that consumers in the Euro zone feel for the economy. When consumers feel more optimistic about the economy they tend to spend more. This in turn gives a boost to the economy.
Consumer Confidence Had Fallen In April
In April 2025, consumer confidence in Euro zone had fallen in comparison to that in March. In April, consumer confidence index came down to 16.7 from 14.5 in March. Imposition of higher tariffs on imports to America by US President Trump had hurt consumer confidence in the Euro zone. This got reflected in lower values for April.

The fact that EU and UK have resolved some of their trade issues, that arose after Brexit, may give a marginal boost to consumer optimism in the zone. Inflation in April in the zone was 2.2% (y-o-y). This was at the same level as that in March. Higher levels of inflation in the past 3 years made a serious dent to consumer confidence in the Euro zone.
