New Delhi, September 22 – Daily essentials and food products are set to become more affordable starting today, as top fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies have slashed prices in line with the revised Goods and Services Tax (GST 2.0) structure.

The price cuts span a wide basket of household and food items, including soaps, shampoos, baby diapers, toothpaste, razors, ghee, butter, coffee, chocolates, juices, and ice cream. The move is expected to give a major push to consumption ahead of the festive season beginning with Navratri.

GST 2.0 Framework

Under GST 2.0, the earlier four slabs of 5, 12, 18, and 28 percent have been reduced to two – 5 percent and 18 percent. Most daily essentials and food products have been brought under the lower 5 percent bracket, except detergents and cosmetics, which remain under 18 percent.

Industry body FICCI estimates that while GST 2.0 may result in short-term revenue loss, it will drive long-term consumption growth, compliance, and wider tax coverage.

Impact on Consumers

With companies already dispatching products with revised MRPs to distributors, e-commerce warehouses, and kirana stores, the benefit is expected to reach consumers immediately. Existing inventories have also been aligned through trade discounts and promotional schemes.

The widespread price cuts, timed with the onset of festive demand, are expected to provide households with significant savings while offering FMCG companies a chance to reignite sales momentum after a period of sluggish urban consumption and high food inflation.
