Indian benchmark indices are poised for a firm opening on Monday, tracking strong gains across Asian markets after a preliminary peace agreement between the United States and Iran eased concerns over disruptions to global oil supplies and improved risk appetite worldwide.

Asia Surges

Asian equities surged in early trade, led by Japan’s Nikkei, which jumped over 5%, while South Korean stocks also rallied similarly. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 2.6%. Broader regional sentiment strengthened after Washington and Tehran agreed on a framework aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global crude shipments.

Oil Slumps

The biggest boost for emerging markets came from the sharp decline in crude oil prices. Brent crude fell nearly 5% to around $83 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate slipped below $81 as traders rapidly unwound the geopolitical risk premium that had built up during months of conflict in the Gulf region.

For India, one of the world’s largest oil importers, the retreat in crude prices is likely to be viewed positively by investors as it eases concerns over inflation, fiscal pressures and corporate input costs. Lower energy prices could also improve the outlook for sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals and consumer goods.

American Futures Advance

Global risk sentiment received an additional lift from U.S. futures. S&P 500 futures were up over 1% in Asian hours, extending the optimism seen late last week when Wall Street posted gains amid expectations that a peace deal could be reached. The three major U.S. indexes had ended Friday’s session higher, supported by easing oil prices and hopes that tensions in the Middle East were nearing a resolution.

Europe Surges

European markets had also ended last week on a strong note, the pan-European STOXX 600 index surging nearly 2% on Friday as investors welcomed signs of de-escalation in the Middle East and the prospect of lower energy costs for businesses and consumers. The positive close in Europe, combined with the rally in Asian equities and gains in U.S. futures, provides a supportive global backdrop for risk assets at the start of the week.

Investors will nevertheless remain cautious, as the U.S.-Iran agreement is currently a framework rather than a final settlement. Market participants will monitor developments closely for confirmation that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz resumes as planned and that ceasefire commitments hold. Any setback in negotiations could revive volatility in oil and equity markets.

For now, however, easing geopolitical tensions, falling crude prices and a broad-based rally across global equities suggest Indian stocks could begin the week on a distinctly positive note.
