Mumbai, October 6: Indian equity benchmarks are likely to open higher on Tuesday, taking cues from gains across Asian markets, and a record close on the Nasdaq, although elevated US Treasury yields could keep gains in check. The Nifty 50 and Sensex had ended higher on Monday, rising 0.60% and 0.66%, respectively, snapping a four-session losing streak.

Asian markets trade higher

Asian equities were trading higher on Tuesday after a technology-led rally on Wall Street lifted the Nasdaq to a record close. Japan’s Nikkei gained 0.2%.

US stock futures were also marginally higher, with Nasdaq futures up 0.04% and S&P 500 futures gaining 0.07%.

Nasdaq ends at record high

US stocks advanced on Monday, with the Nasdaq rising 1% to a record closing high. The S&P 500 gained 0.7%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.2%.

Technology stocks led the gains, with Nvidia rising 2.1% to a record close. Microsoft, Meta Platforms and Tesla also advanced. The rally followed weaker-than-expected US jobs data, which reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month and shifted investor attention towards the upcoming third-quarter earnings season.

However, higher US bond yields remained a concern. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.35%, its highest level since 2002, while the 30-year yield also touched a multi-decade high. Despite this, markets have sharply reduced expectations of a rate hike this month.

Oil prices rise

Crude oil prices rose. Brent crude was up 0.4% at $100.8 a barrel in Asian trade after falling 1.9% on Monday, while West Texas Intermediate crude was up 0.3% at $89.7 a barrel after declining 1.84%.

Oil prices came rose even as Middle Eastern crude exports recovered and G7 nations pledged to boost supplies through the release of emergency stocks. Risks to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remain.

What to expect from Indian markets

The combination of stronger Asian equities and a firm Wall Street close points to a positive start for Indian markets on Tuesday. The domestic market could take support from the improvement in global risk appetite after Monday’s rebound.

However, elevated US Treasury yields and uncertainty around crude supplies are likely to keep investors cautious. Market participants will also track movements in the rupee, oil prices and global bond yields for further direction during the session.
