Mumbai, September 22: Asian equities traded higher on Tuesday, extending the global risk-on mood after a rally on Wall Street, as technology stocks gained. Hopes of progress in US-Iran talks and optimism ahead of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping also supported sentiment across regional markets.
Asia Advances
MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 1.3% in early trade. South Korea’s Kospi jumped 1.8%, while Taiwan’s benchmark Taiex gained 1%, with technology and artificial intelligence-related stocks leading the advance. Chinese equities also moved higher, with the blue-chip CSI300 index rising 0.6% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gaining 0.6%. Japan’s markets were closed for a holiday.
Nasdaq Strong
The technology-led gains followed a strong session on Wall Street, where the Nasdaq Composite hit a record high on Monday as investors returned to AI and semiconductor stocks. The S&P 500 gained 1.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.7%. Chip stocks rallied sharply, with Intel and Arm Holdings posting strong gains, while Advanced Micro Devices crossed the $1 trillion market-capitalisation mark.
The positive US session was also supported by a retreat in Treasury yields. The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield slipped below the psychologically important 5% level, easing some pressure on equities. Wall Street futures remained firm in Asian trade, with Nasdaq futures rising 0.3%.
Oil Prices Remain Key Trigger
Crude oil prices remained the most important macro cue for global markets. Brent crude futures rose 1% at $101.4 a barrel on Tuesday after falling more than 3% in the previous session, while US crude prices also rose 0.8%. This followed signs of possible progress in Middle East diplomacy, including expectations of talks between the US and Iran at the United Nations this week.
Elevated crude prices have been a major source of inflationary pressure. For India, which is heavily dependent on imported crude, sustained moderation in oil prices could support sentiment by easing concerns around the trade deficit, inflation and corporate input costs.
Indian Markets Seen Opening Higher
The combination of firm Asian equities, a strong Wall Street close, and lower US Treasury yields points to a positive start for Indian markets on Tuesday. Indian benchmarks had already gained in the previous session.
However, markets could remain sensitive to crude price movements and developments around US-Iran talks. Investors will also track foreign institutional flows and the broader trend in Asian markets as the session progresses.
