Mumbai, September 9: Indian equity benchmarks are likely to see a cautious start on Wednesday as a sharp rise in crude oil prices towards $100 a barrel raises concerns over inflation and interest rates, while subdued cues from Asian markets and overnight losses on Wall Street keep investor sentiment fragile.
Brent crude futures climbed as high as $99.3 a barrel on Wednesday, while US West Texas Intermediate crude rose to $94.3, as escalating tensions in the Middle East intensified concerns over disruptions to energy supplies. The latest surge followed attacks by Iran-backed Houthi forces on Saudi cities and retaliatory action involving the United States and Iran.
The oil rally is particularly important for India, one of the world’s largest crude importers, as higher energy costs can widen the country’s trade deficit, pressure the rupee and feed into domestic inflation. A sustained rise in crude could also weigh on corporate margins across transport-intensive industries and raise concerns over the trajectory of monetary policy.
Asian Markets Subdued
Asian equities were subdued on Wednesday despite some technology stocks providing support. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.3%, South Korea’s Kospi gained 2% and Taiwan’s benchmark advanced 0.6%, while broader sentiment remained restrained by the oil surge and renewed geopolitical risks.
Investors are also keeping a close watch on currencies and central-bank policy. The Japanese yen strengthened to a near seven-month high as expectations grew that the Bank of Japan could raise interest rates. The move has added to concerns about a possible unwinding of yen-funded carry trades, potentially affecting flows into riskier assets globally.
Wall Street Ends Lower
US equities ended lower as investors turned cautious amid rising oil prices, geopolitical tensions and renewed concerns about inflation. The S&P 500 declined 0.58%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.18% and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.32%.
Technology stocks were under pressure, with software companies hit by renewed concerns about disruption from artificial intelligence. The S&P 500 software and services index fell 1.4%. Semiconductor stocks offered some relief after Intel and Qualcomm gained on developments involving Amazon’s AI-chip initiatives.
The rise in crude prices, however, remains the dominant macro concern. Brent had already climbed to a six-week high of $97.92 on Tuesday, while WTI settled at $93.03 after attacks on Saudi energy facilities heightened fears of further supply disruptions.
Indian Markets Face Oil-Driven Headwinds
For Indian equities, the combination of expensive crude, geopolitical uncertainty and weak overnight US cues points to a cautious-to-negative opening, although gains in select Asian technology stocks could provide some support.
Market participants will track oil prices, the rupee and foreign institutional flows closely. Rising crude could be particularly negative for sectors such as paints, aviation, chemicals and other fuel-intensive businesses, while oil producers and some energy stocks could outperform.
Investors will also remain focused on upcoming US inflation data, which could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next policy move. With crude approaching the psychologically important $100-a-barrel mark, markets are increasingly concerned that an energy-driven inflation shock could complicate the global rate outlook.
Overall, Indian markets could begin Wednesday’s session on a guarded note, with oil prices likely to remain the key swing factor for sentiment and sectoral performance.
