Mumbai, Sept 7: Trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq is fully suspended today as US markets observe the Labor Day holiday. The closure pauses regular equity trading and gives Wall Street a three-day weekend before markets reopen on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. The holiday closure follows a weak final session last week, with major benchmarks ending Friday in negative territory.

The S&P 500 declined 0.4% to close at 7,718.60, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5% to 53,414.25. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.3% to 26,506.99. The Russell 2000 performed better, gaining 0.2%. Major stocks, including Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, Amazon and Microsoft, also have no regular trading session today. Prices displayed on investment platforms may therefore reflect Friday’s closing levels rather than live market movements.

NYSE, Nasdaq and US Bond Markets Close for Labour Day

The NYSE and Nasdaq are completely closed on 7 September, with no regular equity trading session. The US bond market is also effectively closed, with the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association recommending a full trading halt for US dollar-denominated fixed-income securities. This includes government securities, mortgage-backed securities, corporate bonds and municipal bonds.

Some futures contracts may operate under modified holiday schedules. However, movements in equity-index futures do not mean that cash-equity trading has resumed on the NYSE or Nasdaq. Investors should therefore distinguish between futures activity and regular stock-market trading.

Labor Day Creates a Three-Day Wall Street Weekend

The closure results from Labor Day, which the US observes on the first Monday of September to recognise the contribution of workers to the economy. Because the holiday falls on a Monday, US exchanges close for a three-day weekend covering Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The closure follows the regular US market holiday calendar and does not represent an emergency suspension. Several other institutions, including US Post Offices, banks, many businesses and non-essential government agencies, also close for the holiday.

Indian Investors Face Trading Halt and Settlement Delays

Indian investors trading US stocks and ETFs cannot receive normal market execution while US exchanges remain closed. Regular trading resumes on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. ET, which corresponds to 7:00 p.m. IST.

Orders placed during the holiday may remain queued for the next eligible session, depending on the broker and order type. However, queued orders do not guarantee execution. A limit order requires the specified price to become available, while orders with limited validity may expire before the market reopens.

On the resumption day, the pre-market session runs from 4:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ET, or 1:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. IST. The after-hours session runs from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET, or 1:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. IST.

The Federal Reserve also observes Labor Day, which can delay certain dollar transfers, settlement instructions, withdrawals and account-funding processes until the next US working day. Trades completed on Friday, 4 September, generally move towards settlement on Tuesday because the weekend and market holiday do not count as settlement business days.

US Jobs Jump 162,000: Inflation Data and Fed Rate Decision Next

Wall Street will track fresh economic data when US markets reopen after the Labor Day holiday. The August Producer Price Index is due on 10 September, followed by the Consumer Price Index on 11 September. Weekly jobless claims will also provide additional insight into labour-market conditions. These indicators arrive ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting on 15 and 16 September and could influence interest-rate expectations. Treasury yields may respond to stronger or weaker inflation readings. Oil prices and geopolitical tensions involving the US and Iran also remain key risks. Oracle’s quarterly results on 10 September will add another corporate focus.

Thanksgiving and Christmas Are Next Major US Market Holidays

Following Labor Day, the NYSE and Nasdaq have several scheduled closures and early sessions remaining in 2026. Thanksgiving Day on 26 November will bring a full market closure, while Friday, 27 November, will feature an early close at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Christmas Eve on 24 December will also have an early close at 1:00 p.m. ET, followed by a full market closure on Christmas Day, 25 December. Trading schedules can vary for options and other financial products, so investors should check the specific holiday calendar used by their brokers.

The Labor Day holiday has temporarily halted US equity trading on 7 September, leaving investors to assess Friday’s market performance and upcoming economic developments. Trading resumes on Tuesday, with inflation data, Federal Reserve policy expectations, oil prices and geopolitical developments likely to shape market activity.
