As of 9 am, the national average price of gold is Rs 1,46,520 for 24 karat, Rs 1,34,310 for 22 karat and Rs 1,09,890 for 18 karat per 10 grams. On Wednesday, gold prices closed at Rs 1,46,510, Rs 1,34,300 and Rs 1,09,880 for 24K, 22K and 18K gold respectively. Wednesday’s gains come as gold prices surged sharply higher to reach all-time highs. As of market close on Wednesday, the domestic benchmark had settled 0.7 percent higher at Rs 1,46,510 per 10 grams. The yellow metal added Rs 968 to its price in one day, but is still down 0.04 percent from where it started the year.

Traders attributed the pause in gold’s rally to profit-booking after Wednesday’s sharp gains, even as the broader uptrend remains intact on account of safe-haven demand linked to the ongoing Iran war and volatility in crude oil prices. Global spot gold prices too consolidated in a narrow range through Thursday’s Asian trading hours, tracking a mixed dollar index. Analysts said investors are now awaiting fresh triggers from developments in the Iran-US conflict, US Federal Reserve rate signals and the dollar’s trajectory before gold makes its next decisive move.

Physical demand at jewellery stores has held firm through the ongoing wedding season, and retailers expect steady footfalls through the rest of the week even at current elevated price levels. On gold purchases upwards of 2 grams, consumers will have to pay an applicable 3 per cent GST. Most jewellers charge a making cost of Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for simple jewellery designs, which can go up to Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000 for more intricate pieces. Before purchasing gold, buyers should always ask their jeweller for a full break-up of these additional costs.

For context, gold prices had climbed sharply through much of July even before Wednesday’s rally, with the domestic import duty structure and steady central bank buying continuing to underpin the broader uptrend. Analysts said any further escalation in the Iran war, or a fresh bout of weakness in the rupee against the dollar, could push prices back towards fresh highs in the coming sessions. For now, though, Thursday’s near-flat move suggests the market is taking a brief breather after this week’s sharp gains, with traders likely to watch global cues closely heading into the weekend.
