Gold prices in Chennai were largely unchanged on July 20, with rates slipping marginally after remaining flat over the weekend. The 24K gold rate eased to ₹14,328 per gram, while 22K gold edged down to ₹13,134 per gram, suggesting that the market continues to trade within a narrow range after last week’s volatility.

Chennai, July 20: Gold prices started the week on a quiet note in Chennai, with rates slipping by just ₹1 across all major purity categories. After remaining unchanged on Sunday, the market witnessed another muted session, reflecting the cautious mood in the bullion market.
According to today’s retail rates, 24-karat gold is selling at ₹14,328 per gram, down ₹1 from the previous session. 22-karat gold has eased to ₹13,134 per gram, while 18-karat gold is now priced at ₹10,949 per gram, both also lower by ₹1.
The movement is too small to alter the broader trend, but it highlights how gold has entered a consolidation phase after the sharp swings witnessed during the second week of July.

Gold Prices Continue to Move Sideways
The last few sessions have been far calmer than the first half of the month.
After correcting sharply from the July highs, gold recovered slightly before settling into a narrow trading band. Since then, daily price changes have been minimal, with buyers and sellers waiting for fresh global cues before taking bigger positions.
Even after today’s marginal decline, 24K gold remains ₹181 below the month’s high of ₹14,509, giving buyers a better opportunity than they had earlier in July. At the same time, prices have managed to stay above last week’s lows, suggesting the recent correction may have stabilised for now.

Why Do Gold Prices Change Every Day?
Gold prices are influenced by several global and domestic factors, including international bullion prices, movements in the rupee against the US dollar, import duties, inflation expectations, central bank policies and geopolitical developments. Since these factors change regularly, retail gold prices are updated every day across cities.
Conclusion
Gold prices in Chennai remained largely steady on July 20, with 24K gold easing marginally to ₹14,328 per gram. While today’s decline was negligible, it extended the market’s recent phase of consolidation after the sharp swings seen earlier this month. Buyers continue to benefit from prices below July’s highs, while investors will keep an eye on global bullion markets for the next major trigger.
