Kolkata, August 06: Gold buyers in Kolkata woke up to a much steeper price tag today. After gaining strongly over the past few sessions, the yellow metal delivered another big move on August 6, with prices climbing close to ₹400 per gram. It’s one of the strongest daily increases seen in recent weeks and pushes domestic gold rates to fresh highs.

As of today, 24-carat gold is priced at ₹14,973 per gram, up ₹398 from the previous session. 22-carat gold has jumped to ₹13,725 per gram, registering a gain of ₹365, while 18-carat gold now costs ₹11,230 per gram, rising by ₹299.

This isn’t the kind of movement driven by local jewellery demand alone. A rally of this size usually reflects developments in the global bullion market, where investors have been shifting money into gold amid economic uncertainty and expectations around interest-rate policy.

For anyone planning to buy jewellery, today’s jump makes purchases noticeably more expensive. For investors already holding gold, however, it’s another session where the metal has reinforced its role as a defensive asset.

What’s Behind Today’s Sharp Jump?

The size of today’s increase stands out.

Unlike the ₹1 or ₹5 changes often seen during quiet trading sessions, a jump of nearly ₹400 suggests that international markets had a much bigger influence overnight. Stronger global gold prices, a softer dollar in some trading sessions, and renewed demand for safe-haven assets have all helped lift domestic rates.

Gold has also been benefiting whenever investors become uncertain about interest-rate decisions or broader economic growth. Instead of moving into riskier assets, many choose bullion as a store of value.

The Indian rupee also plays a role. Since India imports most of its gold, any weakness in the currency can amplify gains in domestic prices.

Looking at the last ten sessions, today’s rally changes the picture completely. Gold had already recovered strongly yesterday, but this fresh surge has pushed prices well above the levels seen throughout late July. In just two trading sessions, 24K gold has gained nearly ₹573 per gram, signalling that momentum has shifted decisively in favour of buyers. Whether this rally sustains will depend largely on global bullion prices and upcoming macroeconomic data.

What Could Influence Gold Prices Next?

The next move in gold prices will depend on several factors, including:

  • Global spot gold prices
  • US Federal Reserve policy and interest-rate expectations
  • Inflation and economic data
  • Rupee-US dollar exchange rate
  • Central bank purchases
  • Geopolitical developments and investor sentiment

Conclusion

Gold prices in Kolkata saw a strong breakout on August 6, with 24K gold climbing ₹398 to ₹14,973 per gram and 22K gold rising ₹365 to ₹13,725 per gram. It’s one of the biggest daily gains in recent weeks and reinforces the strong momentum that has built over the last two sessions. If global bullion prices remain supportive, gold is likely to stay in focus, although buyers should also be prepared for increased volatility after such a sharp move.
