Kolkata, July 28: Gold prices in Kolkata fell sharply on Tuesday, wiping out Monday’s gains and pushing rates back toward the lower end of their recent range. The decline was broad-based, with 24K, 22K and 18K gold all recording sizeable losses.

The 24-karat gold rate dropped ₹172 to ₹14,417 per gram from ₹14,589 on July 27. The 22-karat rate fell ₹155 to ₹13,215 per gram, while 18-karat gold declined ₹126 to ₹10,813.

Tuesday’s fall comes after 24K gold gained ₹96 in the previous session. The latest move also leaves the 24K rate ₹234 below its July 22 level of ₹14,651, showing just how quickly prices have swung over the past week.

Gold Gives Up Monday’s Gains

The latest drop adds another sharp move to what has already been a volatile stretch for gold buyers in Kolkata.

The 24K rate had climbed to ₹14,651 per gram on July 22 following a ₹229 increase. Prices then slipped to ₹14,618 on July 23 before falling ₹185 to ₹14,433 on July 24.

A modest recovery followed. Gold gained ₹60 on July 25, remained unchanged on July 26 and added another ₹96 on July 27. But Tuesday’s ₹172 decline has erased that latest advance and taken the rate back to ₹14,417.

For buyers, Tuesday’s correction has reduced the cost of 10 grams of 22K gold by ₹1,550 compared with Monday, before making charges and taxes.

Why Do Gold Prices Change Every Day?

Gold rates in Kolkata are influenced by both international and domestic factors. Global bullion prices are a major driver, while movements in the rupee against the US dollar can affect the local cost of imported gold.

Interest-rate expectations, inflation, geopolitical developments and central bank activity can also move international gold prices. Import costs, taxes and domestic market conditions then feed into the rates available to Indian buyers.

Conclusion

Gold prices in Kolkata saw a sizeable correction on July 28, with 24K gold falling ₹172 to ₹14,417 per gram. The 22K rate dropped to ₹13,215, while 18K gold declined to ₹10,813.

Tuesday’s fall erased Monday’s gains and left gold considerably below the July 22 high. Even so, 24K and 22K prices remain slightly above their July 19 levels. After several sharp moves in both directions, buyers are dealing with a market that remains volatile rather than one following a clear short-term trend.
