Kolkata, July 29: Gold prices in Kolkata continued to soften on Wednesday, following another day of losses in the bullion market. The decline was less severe than Tuesday’s sharp fall, but it kept prices on a downward path and erased a large part of the gains seen during last week’s rally.

The latest retail rates show 24-karat gold at ₹14,351 per gram, down ₹66 from the previous session. 22-karat gold is priced at ₹13,155 per gram, while 18-karat gold has eased to ₹10,763 per gram, down ₹50.

Although the market has cooled over the past two sessions, prices are still holding above the levels seen around July 20. Buyers who delayed purchases during last week’s upswing are now getting a chance to buy at relatively lower rates.

Last Week’s Rally Has Almost Been Wiped Out

Gold prices climbed steadily through most of last week before touching ₹14,651 per gram on July 22. The rally briefly lifted market sentiment, but it didn’t last long.

A sharp correction on July 28, followed by another decline on Wednesday, has pushed prices down by ₹238 over the past two trading sessions. As a result, 24K gold now trades ₹300 below last week’s high, reflecting a clear loss of upward momentum.

Despite several sharp daily swings, gold has ended up almost where it started over the last 10 days. The latest correction has effectively cancelled out most of last week’s gains, leaving only a marginal increase from the July 20 level.

Why Do Gold Prices Change Every Day?

Gold prices move in response to a mix of global and domestic factors. International bullion prices, fluctuations in the rupee against the U.S. dollar, import costs and inflation expectations all influence retail gold rates in India.

Interest-rate expectations, central bank buying, geopolitical developments and investor demand for safe-haven assets also play an important role. Local taxes and jeweller-specific charges then determine the final price consumers pay.

Conclusion

Gold prices in Kolkata stayed under pressure on July 29, with 24K gold slipping to ₹14,351 per gram and 22K gold falling to ₹13,155 per gram. The second straight day of losses has erased much of last week’s rally, although prices remain slightly above where they were earlier in the month.

For jewellery buyers, the recent correction may offer a better entry point than the highs seen last week. Investors, meanwhile, are likely to keep a close watch on global bullion prices and currency movements for the next signal on where gold heads from here.
