New Delhi, August 19: Gold prices in India eased on Wednesday, giving back part of Tuesday’s gains as all three major purity categories recorded a pullback through the morning session. Today’s national rate for gold stands at ₹1,54,970 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold (99.9% purity), ₹1,42,050 per 10 grams for 22 karat gold (91.6% purity), and ₹1,16,230 per 10 grams for 18 karat gold (75% purity). On a per-gram basis, that works out to ₹15,497 for 24K, ₹14,205 for 22K, and ₹11,623 for 18K gold, while a full kilogram of 24K gold is now valued at approximately ₹1,54,97,000.
The pullback marks a reversal of ₹920 for 24K gold, ₹850 for 22K gold, and ₹690 for 18K gold per 10 grams from Tuesday’s closing levels of ₹1,55,890, ₹1,42,900 and ₹1,16,920, respectively — equivalent to a per-gram decline of ₹92, ₹85 and ₹69. The retreat comes after gold had ticked higher through Tuesday’s session, and dealers said Wednesday’s move looks more like profit-booking than the start of a fresh downtrend.
Gold has long been considered a reliable hedge against inflation, and investors increasingly view it as an important investment option even through short-term swings such as Wednesday’s dip. Dealers attributed Wednesday’s softer tone largely to a firmer US dollar overnight, which typically makes dollar-denominated gold costlier for holders of other currencies and tends to dampen buying interest. Profit-booking after Tuesday’s advance also played a role, traders said, as some investors chose to lock in gains rather than chase prices higher into an uncertain global backdrop. Even so, dealers noted that the pullback has been shallow so far, with the national 24K rate still holding comfortably above where it stood earlier in the month, suggesting the broader uptrend remains intact despite the day’s softness.
Global cues remained mixed through the Asian trading session, with spot gold prices largely rangebound as investors awaited fresh signals on the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate path. Any indication of a delay in rate cuts tends to pressure gold, since the metal offers no yield of its own and becomes relatively less attractive when returns on interest-bearing assets improve. Conversely, renewed geopolitical or economic uncertainty could quickly reverse Wednesday’s softness, market watchers said, given how sharply gold has swung in either direction over the past several sessions.
City-Wise Gold Rates: Wednesday vs Tuesday
The tables below set Tuesday’s (Aug 18) closing rates for 10 major Indian cities against Wednesday’s (Aug 19) rates, purity by purity, quoted per 10 grams, with the day-on-day change alongside. The 24K and 22K declines were uniform at ₹920 and ₹850, respectively, across all ten cities, keeping their relative premiums intact. Delhi continues to run the highest rate nationally, roughly ₹150 above the national average across purities, while Vadodara and Ahmedabad trade a smaller premium of about ₹50 above the national rate.
The 18K table tells a more mixed story. Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad all moved lower in step with the national trend, but Kolkata, Hyderabad and Kerala actually edged up by ₹40 per 10 grams even as the rest of the market softened — a divergence that suggests localised jewellery-trade demand in those markets rather than any shift in the underlying bullion price.

Retail buyers are reminded that quoted bullion rates are indicative, and actual billed prices at jewellery counters will vary once making charges, wastage and applicable GST are added on top of the base metal value. Market watchers said Wednesday’s softer national rate, paired with the uneven city-wise moves, points to a market that is consolidating after a run of gains rather than reversing course outright. With no major shift in global cues overnight, dealers expect gold to trade in a relatively narrow range through the rest of the week unless fresh triggers, such as US interest rate signals or a change in the dollar index, prompt the next major move.
