Mumbai, July 24: Mumbai, July 24: Gold prices slipped in India on Friday, with national rates for 24 karat gold down to Rs 1,46,170 per 10 grams, 22 karat gold down to Rs 1,33,990 per 10 grams, and 18 karat gold down to Rs 1,09,630 per 10 grams. This compared to Thursday’s levels of Rs 1,46,520, Rs 1,34,310 and Rs 1,09,890 per 10 grams respectively, it’s a fall of Rs 350, Rs 320and Rs 260, respectively. India’s gold prices are pulling back after skyrocketing to record highs on Wednesday, surging nearly Rs 968 in a single session before consolidating slightly on Thursday with just a Rs 10 rise seen across all three purity levels. Bullion dealers note that overall uptrend still remains firmly in place as safe-haven demand persists over the Iran war and turbulent crude oil prices.
City-wise Gold Rates
Rates by Goodreturns.in are compiled from gram rates quoted by jewellers in each city, and have been converted here into per 10 gram rates for simplicity. Chennai has the highest premium in the country across all three purities today (Friday), whereas in previous sessions the premium existed mostly just in 18 karat gold. The rate for 24 karat gold in Chennai is Rs 1,47,290 per 10 grams, Rs 1,120 premium over the national rate; 22 karat gold Rs 1,35,010, a premium of Rs 1,020; 18 karat gold Rs 1,13,160, significantly higher at a premium of Rs 3,530 over the national rate.
Delhi comes in a close second with the city quoting the second-highest rates in the country. 24 karat gold in Delhi traded at Rs 1,46,320 per 10 grams, 22 karat gold Rs 1,34,140 and 18 karat gold Rs 1,09,780; all three running marginally higher than the national average.
Vadodara and Ahmedabad quote the next highest premiums over the national average. Rates for 24 karat gold here traded at Rs 1,46,220 per 10 grams, 22 karat gold Rs 1,34,040 and 18 karat gold Rs 1,09,680; lower premiums than Chennai and Delhi but still a premium over the national average. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune are all ruling at today’s national average rates. This means that gold in these cities is available at Rs 1,46,170 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,33,990 for 22 karat gold and Rs 1,09,630 for 18 karat gold per 10 grams.

As always we recommend buyers to check live rates throughout the day and confirm the final price with your jeweller before buying or selling, taking into account making charges and GST on top of the quoted gold price. Bullion dealers have noted physical demand at jewellery stores continue to see robust demand through the ongoing wedding season so far, despite prices trading significantly higher than at the start of the year. They expect that underlying demand will continue through the weekend as well. Purchases of gold above 2 grams will attract GST at applicable 3 per cent rate. Jewellers typically charge between Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for making charges if the design is simple. The charges can rise to between Rs 2,000 to Rs 15,000 for more elaborate jewellery designs.
Gold prices are likely to witness a fresh spike towards fresh record highs if there is any further escalation in tensions between Iran and the US over the weekend, or if the rupee plunges further against the dollar, analysts say. This is despite gold pulling back from Wednesday’s record highs in Friday trade.
Looking ahead we now look to the Iran-US crisis to further develop over the weekend and any commentary from the US Federal Reserve on interest rates. Should we see a sustained cooling in tensions, gold prices could see today’s losses expand. But any further spike in tensions in the Middle East, or sharp swings in the rupee-dollar exchange rate, could reverse Friday’s losses and send gold back towards record highs from earlier in the week.
