Mumbai, July 27: Gold prices traded lower on Monday morning in India as national rates for 24 karat gold declined to Rs 1,44,920 per 10 grams, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,32,840 per 10 grams and 18 karat gold Rs 1,08,690 per 10 grams. This compares with last Friday’s closing prices of Rs 1,46,170, Rs 1,33,990 and Rs 1,09,630 per 10 grams each respectively – a drop of Rs 1,250, Rs 1,150 and Rs 940, respectively, across all three popular purities.
The dip follows the pullback we witnessed last week which saw gold surrendering some of its recent gains after skyrocketing to record highs on Wednesday last week on persistent safe-haven demand; bullion dealers indicate the broader uptrend for gold prices so far this year still remains intact despite the decline seen through last week and Monday. “Safe-haven demand has eased following both the US and Iran agreeing to pause their retaliatory strikes over the weekend,” said bullion dealers. “That together with a firmer dollar index weighed on gold prices at the beginning of the week and continues to cap rate rise at home.”
Spot gold traded marginally weaker throughout Monday’s Asian session as traders wait on further cues from both the US Federal Reserve over interest rates later this month as well as the Iran-US tensions that remain fragile after both nations agreed to pause military strikes over the weekend. Recall, gold prices surged to lifetime highs earlier last week before declining on Thursday and then again on Friday as investors booked profits from the strong rally we’ve witnessed so far this month. Unless we see fresh cues to drive prices higher or lower, analysts believe gold could extend its current correction a bit further.
