Mumbai, July 29: Gold rates in India extended their decline for a second straight session on Wednesday, with national average rates slipping further across all popular purities. As of Wednesday, national average gold rates stand at Rs 1,43,510 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,31,550 per 10 grams for 22 karat gold, and Rs 1,07,630 per 10 grams for 18 karat gold.

The yellow metal’s rates fell by Rs 660 in 24K gold, Rs 600 for 22K gold and Rs 500 for 18K gold from Tuesday’s levels of Rs 1,44,170, Rs 1,32,150 and Rs 1,08,130 per 10 grams respectively. Gold has now shed more than Rs 1,400 across 24K rates over the past two sessions, extending a downward trajectory that began after prices touched record highs last week.

Gold prices continued to soften on Wednesday as safe-haven demand eased further, with the fragile Iran-US pause largely holding even as fresh flare-ups, including intercepted Iranian missiles aimed at American forces in the region, kept the situation tense through Tuesday. A firmer risk appetite in equity markets, with the Sensex and Nifty rallying sharply at Wednesday’s open and Asian and US markets trading broadly higher overnight, has drawn some investor interest away from the safe-haven metal and into riskier assets. A rebound in crude oil prices, which recouped much of Tuesday’s sharp losses, and a steady dollar index also weighed on sentiment for bullion through the session, with traders noting that gold and oil have moved in somewhat divergent directions this week as the broader Iran narrative shifts.

“Gold could see further correction if the Iran-US truce holds without fresh escalation, though any sharp response from Tehran to US action could quickly reverse the move,” a Mumbai-based bullion dealer said, when asked about the near-term outlook. Traders said global spot gold also traded softer during Wednesday’s Asian session, tracking the pullback in Indian rates.
