Mumbai, Aug 3: Mumbai, Aug 3: Gold prices edged lower in India on Monday. The national rate for gold stood at Rs 1,44,220 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,32,200 for 22 karat gold, and Rs 1,08,160 for 18 karat gold per 10 grams on Monday morning. This marks a decline of Rs 110, Rs 100 and Rs 90, respectively, from Thursday’s levels of Rs 1,44,330, Rs 1,32,300 and Rs 1,08,250 per 10 grams, when gold had rebounded sharply after two consecutive sessions of losses. After Thursday, gold rose marginally on Friday and the weekend. The pullback comes even as the broader uptrend in bullion remains largely intact. Traders said Monday’s softness reflects routine profit-booking rather than any fundamental shift in sentiment. Global spot gold also eased slightly in early Asian trade, tracking a modestly firmer dollar index. Even so, safe-haven appetite has stayed elevated in recent weeks, with investors continuing to monitor the fragile Iran-US détente and its implications for the region.
Market participants also flagged the US Federal Reserve’s stance heading into its September meeting as a key swing factor for gold in the near term. The central bank’s hawkish undertone, along with three officials having voted for a rate hike, has kept traders cautious about the pace of further easing. Dealers said any fresh signs of inflation pressure from elevated oil prices could add to that caution and inject more volatility into bullion prices over the coming sessions.
City-Wise Gold Rates
Gold rates published by Goodreturns.in are quoted per gram; these have been converted to per 10 gram rates for ease of comparison. As has typically been the case, Chennai continues to command the widest premium among major cities, particularly in 18 karat gold. On Monday, the city’s 18 karat gold traded at Rs 1,10,650 per 10 grams, a premium of roughly Rs 2,490 over the national average, while its 24 karat rate of Rs 1,44,550 and 22 karat rate of Rs 1,32,500 also ran slightly ahead of the national benchmark.
Delhi remained the second-costliest major market, with 24 karat gold quoted at Rs 1,44,370 and 22 karat gold at Rs 1,32,350 per 10 grams, while 18 karat gold in the capital stood at Rs 1,08,310, all mildly above the national average. Vadodara and Ahmedabad again moved in lockstep with each other, quoting a smaller premium to the national rate: 24 karat gold at Rs 1,44,270, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,32,250 and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,08,210 per 10 grams in both cities. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune, meanwhile, all traded exactly in line with the national average of Rs 1,44,220 for 24 karat, Rs 1,32,200 for 22 karat and Rs 1,08,160 for 18 karat gold per 10 grams.
As always, buyers and sellers are advised to confirm live rates through the day with their jeweller before transacting, and to factor in making charges and GST while checking the final billed price.
Dealers said physical demand at jewellery counters has held up reasonably well despite the recent bout of price volatility, with wedding-season buying continuing to offer support even as gold prices remain well up on a year-to-date basis. The metal’s near-term direction is likely to hinge on how the Iran-US situation evolves and, more significantly, on cues from the Federal Reserve as it approaches its September policy meeting.
Analysts noted that despite Monday’s dip, gold continues to trade well above levels seen just a few weeks ago, and most market watchers still expect the metal to stay in demand as a hedge against geopolitical and inflation-related uncertainty. Silver prices, which often move in tandem with gold, were also seen trading with a slightly softer bias in early trade, tracking the pullback in bullion more broadly. Analysts added that any further correction is likely to be shallow, with dip-buying expected to cap sharp declines given the underlying strength in safe-haven demand this year.
