Mumbai, July 30: Gold rates on Thursday rose sharply in India after declining in previous two sessions.
The national rate for gold was Rs 1,44,330 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,32,300 for 22 karat gold, and Rs 1,08,250 for 18 karat gold per 10 grams as of Thursday morning. This is a jump of Rs 820, Rs 750 and Rs 620, respectively, over Wednesday’s levels of Rs 1,43,510, Rs 1,31,550 and Rs 1,07,630 per 10 grams.
This reverses recent losses that saw gold prices fall by close to Rs 1,400 from 24 karat gold’s recent record highs last week. Bullion dealers said the upturn was driven by profit booking by short-covering coming to an end after Wednesday’s slide and fresh safe-haven demand picking up amid uncertainty over whether the fragile Iran-US detente holds.
The softer dollar index after the US Federal Reserve’s announcement also aided bullion, traders said. Markets also saw buying in gold even as riskier assets like Indian equities traded firm through the day, limiting expectations of a broad risk-off move. Global spot gold prices also ticked higher through Asian trade on Thursday.
A near 1% jump through Thursday’s Asian session mirrors domestic moves. Here too, investors are still processing the Fed’s hawkish undertone and three officials voting for a rate hike.
City-Wise Gold Rates
Gold rates displayed by Goodreturns.in are given per gram rates. We convert those rates to per 10 gram rates for your convenience. Keep in mind that some cities — Chennai, in particular — command a wide premium, especially when it comes to 18 karat gold.
Chennai trades its 18 karat gold at Rs 1,10,450 per 10 grams as of Thursday, a premium of Rs 2,200 over the national average. However, its rates for 24 karat gold (Rs 1,44,330) and 22 karat gold (Rs 1,32,300) trade at par with the national average price for those grades. Delhi features the highest gold rates in India with 24 karat gold at Rs 1,44,480 and 22 karat gold at Rs 1,32,450 per 10 grams. Gold rates in Delhi for 18 karat gold are Rs 1,08,400 per 10 grams, also above the national average. All three rates trade mildly higher than their respective national averages.
Vadodara and Ahmedabad follow closely, quoting a smaller premium to the national average. Prices for 24 karat gold here stand at Rs 1,44,380 per 10 grams, with 22 karat gold at Rs 1,32,350 and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,08,300 as well in both cities. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune all trade exactly at the national average rate. Those rates are Rs 1,44,330 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,32,300 for 22 karat gold and Rs 1,08,250 for 18 karat gold.
As always, please ensure that you confirm live rates through the day at your jeweller before buying or selling. We recommend checking the final billed price with the jeweller before completing the transaction as well, and factoring in making charges and GST.
Dealers also said physical demand at the jewellery counters have held up through recent price volatility. Demand from wedding season shopping continues to support buying even though gold is up sharply year-to-date. The metal’s near-term price moves are likely to be dictated by cues from the Iran-US situation and more importantly from the Fed leading into its September meet, analysts said. The Fed said higher oil prices and inflation was one risk it was watching closely develop.
