Mumbai, Aug 4: The national rate for gold stood at Rs 1,44,000 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,32,000 for 22 karat gold, and Rs 1,08,000 for 18 karat gold per 10 grams on Tuesday morning, extending Monday’s pullback. This marks a decline of Rs 220, Rs 200 and Rs 160, respectively, from Monday’s levels of Rs 1,44,220, Rs 1,32,200 and Rs 1,08,160 per 10 grams, when the metal had already given back a part of the sharp gains logged in the previous session.

The fresh dip comes even as the broader uptrend in bullion remains largely intact, with traders attributing the softness to routine profit-booking rather than any fundamental shift in sentiment. Global spot gold also eased slightly in early Asian trade on Tuesday, tracking a modestly firmer dollar index, even as safe-haven appetite has stayed elevated in recent weeks, with investors continuing to monitor the fragile Iran-US détente and its implications for the region. The contradictory statements from Washington and Tehran over the state of talks to end the war have added to the uncertainty keeping bullion in favour as a hedge, even as easing tensions on Monday briefly took some shine off the metal.

Market participants also flagged the US Federal Reserve’s stance heading into its September meeting as a key swing factor for gold in the near term. The central bank’s hawkish undertone, along with three officials having voted for a rate hike at the previous meeting, has kept traders cautious about the pace of further policy easing. Dealers said any fresh signs of inflation pressure from elevated oil prices could add to that caution and inject more volatility into bullion prices over the coming sessions, even as physical demand at jewellery counters has held up reasonably well despite the recent bout of price swings, with wedding-season buying continuing to offer support even as gold prices remain well up on a year-to-date basis. The metal’s near-term direction is likely to hinge on how the Iran-US situation evolves and, more significantly, on cues from the Federal Reserve as it approaches its September policy meeting.

City-Wise Gold Rates

Gold rates published by Goodreturns.in are quoted per gram; these have been converted to per 10 gram rates for ease of comparison. As has typically been the case, Chennai continued to command the widest premium among major cities on Tuesday, particularly in 18 karat gold, where the city’s rate of Rs 1,10,150 per 10 grams ran roughly Rs 2,150 ahead of the national average, even as its 24 karat and 22 karat rates of Rs 1,44,000 and Rs 1,32,000, respectively, tracked the national benchmark. Delhi remained the second-costliest major market, with 24 karat gold quoted at Rs 1,44,150, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,32,150 and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,08,150 per 10 grams, all running a modest Rs 150 above the national rate.

Vadodara and Ahmedabad again moved in lockstep with each other, quoting a smaller premium of about Rs 50 over the national rate, with 24 karat gold at Rs 1,44,050, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,32,050 and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,08,050 per 10 grams in both cities. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune, meanwhile, all traded exactly in line with the national average of Rs 1,44,000 for 24 karat, Rs 1,32,000 for 22 karat and Rs 1,08,000 for 18 karat gold per 10 grams. As always, buyers and sellers are advised to confirm live rates through the day with their jeweller before transacting, and to factor in making charges and GST while checking the final billed price. Analysts noted that despite the two-session slide, gold continues to trade well above levels seen just a few weeks ago, and most market watchers still expect the metal to stay in demand as a hedge against geopolitical and inflation-related uncertainty, with silver prices also seen trading with a slightly softer bias in early trade, tracking the pullback in bullion more broadly.
