New Delhi, Sept 9: Gold prices in India traded lower this morning, with the national 24 karat gold rate (99.9% purity) declining to ₹1,54,310 per 10 grams, 22 karat gold price (91.6% purity) at ₹1,41,450 per 10 grams and 18 karat gold rate (75% purity) listed at ₹1,15,730 per 10 grams. Gold tumbles ₹1,040 per 10 grams from Tuesday’s national quote of ₹1,55,350 – the first significant drop of the week, after two successive sessions of increases and a quiet open on Monday.
Gold has traditionally been viewed as an effective hedge against inflation and the weaker spot price for bullion comes despite enduring bullish factors for the metal. Buyers looking to purchase gold can refer to a Gold Rate Calculator to determine the expected final billed price at the jeweller’s counter, based on their desired purchase quantity and taking into account making charges, wastage and applicable GST. Figures stated here are indicative national averages aggregated from trusted jewellers across the country and updated multiple times through the trading day; expect actual prices at the jewellery counter to vary slightly between different retailers.
While prices have moved higher across the board in recent sessions, demand at the physical front has stayed strong at the street-level, jewellers noted. Buying has been fueled by ongoing wedding-season demand as well as festivities-related purchases in some parts of the country. Retailers added that today’s softer gold prices could bring out buyers who’ve been waiting for an opportunity to purchase at a slightly cheaper rate, with some outlets even reporting modest pickup in footfall so far as the day’s trading session gets underway.
City-Wise Gold Rates: Tuesday vs Wednesday
Below we list gold rates from Tuesday (Sept 8) against Wednesday’s (Sept 9) for 10 major cities in India. Prices are quoted per 10 grams for 24K, 22K and 18K gold. Nine cities saw their gold quotes pullback by the exact same margins this Wednesday — ₹1,040 for 24K gold, ₹950 for 22K gold and ₹780 for 18K gold; these cities include Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala, Pune, Vadodara and Ahmedabad. Chennai saw larger declines across all three purity benchmarks — its quotes also match the national average price exactly for 24K and 22K gold today, where previously they were at a premium to the rest of the country. Chennai’s 18K gold rate remains above the rest of India even after today’s correction.

18K Gold — 10 Major Cities (per 10 gm)
| City | Tue, Sep 8 | Wed, Sep 9 | Diff |
| Chennai | ₹1,20,400 | ₹1,19,150 | -₹1,250 |

As seen in the tables above, Chennai’s rate for 18K gold stands at ₹1,19,150 per 10 grams, remaining well above prices quoted in Mumbai (₹1,15,730), Kolkata (₹1,15,730), Bangalore (₹1,15,730), Hyderabad (₹1,15,730), Kerala (₹1,15,730) and Pune (₹1,15,730) even after today’s downward correction. However, what is notable this session is that Chennai no longer commands a premium on 24K and 22K gold — premiums that have existed at some level or another for much of this year — with both priced exactly at today’s national average. Market participants said that while it is unclear what caused this sudden revision lower in Chennai gold premiums, it will be interesting to track if city’s discount/rate-band to the rest of India narrows further over coming trading sessions.

Jewellery Stocks Today
The four jewellery stocks on our watch list traded mixed this morning on Wednesday, with PC Jeweller shares rising even as gold prices traded lower and the broader sector eased. PC Jeweller shares advanced nearly 2% in early trade, while Titan Company, Kalyan Jewellers India and Thangamayil Jewellery all traded in the red. Thangamayil Jewellery shares were Wednesday’s worst performer by far, slumping over 2% on turnover well above its 50-day average after opening sharply lower and failing to recover lost ground through the first hour of trade.

Thangamayil Jewellery: Steepest Fall of the Session
Shares of Thangamayil Jewellery fell over 2% during Wednesday’s morning trade session, posting the steepest decline among the four jewellery stocks. The counter opened well below its previous close and moved lower quickly within the first few minutes of trade before stabilising. While Thangamayil shares recovered somewhat from their session open, they failed to recapture any meaningful upside and drifted closer to their lows through the rest of morning trade. Thangamayil’s order book was seen favouring sellers through the session, with total order quantity on the buy side roughly one-third that of the sell side.
PC Jeweller was the only one of the four stocks to move higher, gaining ground slowly throughout the morning after opening on the higher side of its previous close. PC Jeweller’s intraday chart showed its price tracing a near-constant upward slope through the first hour of trade, before gradually easing toward midday. Kalyan Jewellers India drifted lower for most of Wednesday morning after opening largely flat on the day. Buy-side interest lagged sell-side volume through the day on Kalyan’s order book, with total order quantity from buyers trailing sellers by around 40%. Titan Company traded narrowly for most of the morning session, bouncing between small gains and losses after opening down. Titan’s order book was seen relatively balanced between buyers and sellers, with total order quantity on either side running about evenly matched even as the stock price stayed in negative territory.
Analysts said PC Jeweller’s move higher against the broader weakness in the sector — and indeed gold itself — shows that stock-specific catalysts are overpowering gold price movements at the individual company level once again. Gold’s short-term trajectory is now likely to remain aligned with international markets into the rest of the week, dealers added. Wednesday’s fall may prove significant if that trend continues and gold opens weaker on Thursday; else, today’s price action could just as easily be absorbed as a one-session correction in what has been a predominantly upward trend for gold recently.
