Mumbai, July 13: Gold prices declined marginally today following a partial retracement from last Friday’s strong rebound, as investors awaited fresh cues from global markets. Rates for 10 grams of 24 karat gold were quoted at ₹1,44,320 in the national capital on Monday, down ₹130 from Friday’s closing price of ₹1,44,450. Rates for 22 and 18 karat gold were trading lower by ₹120 and ₹100 to ₹1,32,290 and ₹1,08,240 per 10 grams, respectively.

Gold prices had jumped by ₹1,330 on a 10 gram basis for 24 karat gold on Friday and ₹1,220 and ₹1,000 for 22 and 18 karat gold respectively as prices rebounded sharply from Thursday’s steep decline, as reported by goodreturns.in. Prices had fallen by ₹3,490 on Thursday after investors took profit from the previous week’s rally, highlighting the choppy two-way trading action seen in recent sessions.

Monday’s weakness follows the recent volatility seen throughout last week and suggests some investors sold holdings at higher levels even as gold trades have remained two way through the past few sessions. Overall, bullion dealers said demand at jewellery outlets has remained healthy amid the wedding season, with investors also looking to balance the near-term outlook for gold prices against expectations for global interest rates and inflation-driven safe-haven demand. Investors will continue to focus on incoming economic data points that provide clues on how quickly central banks buy bullion and the general direction of the dollar, factors that have influenced prices throughout recent months.

Spot gold rates usually track movements in international bullion prices along with macroeconomic variables unique to India, namely the rupee-dollar exchange rate and import duties. Domestic rates are also being watched for hints on whether gold corrects from here or continues to move toward recent highs.
