Mumbai, July 2: Gold prices fell Thursday as investors continued to book profits for the third straight session after last week’s rally driven by tensions in West Asia.
After Wednesday’s early bounce back, gold failed to hold on to gains and slipped Rs 1,280 to Rs 1,40,770 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold (99.9% purity) from Wednesday’s closing price at Rs 1,42,050. Meanwhile, gold rates for 22 karat gold (91.6% purity) dipped Rs 1,170 to Rs 1,29,040 per 10 grams from its previous closing price at Rs 1,30,210. Additionally, prices for 18 karat gold (75% purity) dipped Rs 960 to Rs 1,05,580 per 10 grams from Wednesday’s closing price at Rs 1,06,540.
Gold had shown signs of consolidation on Wednesday with prices inching up by Rs 130 but sentiment turned negative Thursday and dropped below Rs 1,42,000 as renewed profit booking started. Clearly now, sellers are back in control of the gold market as safe-haven demand fuelled by escalation in West Asia has receded significantly as investors price in stability.
