Mumbai, July 7: Gold prices in India eased marginally on Tuesday with spot gold prices slipping Rs 110 on Tuesday to Rs 1,46,610 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold (99.9% purity). Gold closed at Rs 1,46,720 for 10 grams on Monday.

The price of 22 karat gold (91.6% purity) also dipped by Rs 100 to Rs 1,34,390 per 10 grams from Rs 1,34,490, while 18 karat gold (75% purity) slipped by Rs 80 to Rs 1,09,960 per 10 grams from Rs 1,10,040.

Tuesday’s retreat comes after bullion notched two straight sessions of strong gains during which gold rose by close to Rs 6,000 per 10 grams of 24 karat gold between Friday and Monday. The slight correction saw prices pulling back marginally, potentially signalling some profit booking creeping into the market after the recent spike. Demand from jewellers and retail buyers meanwhile continues to underpin prices, and remain firm in anticipation of wedding and festive season demand.

Mixed moves in global markets capped gains on Tuesday, as a slight firming in the U.S. dollar index weighed down buying by investors tracking global markets. A wait-and-watch approach on the back of upcoming economic data releases from the U.S. also capped safe-haven demand, analysts said. That said, the strong upmove in gold seen over the last two sessions will most likely hold over the short term, said analysts, adding buying pressure should resume if prices slip further as dips continue to be considered a buying opportunity by long-term investors.

As for bullion prices in other Indian cities, Chennai continues to be the most expensive city to buy gold in. 10 grams of gold is priced at Rs 1,47,920 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,35,590 for 22 karat gold and Rs 1,12,990 for 18 karat gold.

Prices in Chennai are hence Rs 1,310 dearer than India’s national benchmark price of Rs 1,46,610 for 10 grams of 24 karat gold. The difference can be attributed to local taxes as well as the rate recommended by jewellers’ associations in Tamil Nadu which their members sell gold at.

Delhi comes a close second, pricing 24 karat gold at Rs 1,46,760, 22 karat gold at Rs 1,34,540 and 18 karat gold at Rs 1,10,110 for 10 grams. Delhi’s prices are at a Rs 150 premium to national prices for 24K gold currently, which has remained steady over the last few sessions.

Vadodara and Ahmedabad are marginally higher than national prices at Rs 1,46,660 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,34,440 for 22 karat gold and Rs 1,10,010 for 18 karat gold for 10 grams. Both cities have a Rs 50 premium over national rates for 24 karat gold.

Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune reported no variance from the national benchmark price. Gold prices are at Rs 1,46,610, Rs 1,34,390 and Rs 1,09,960 for 24, 22 and 18 karat gold respectively in these cities. All prices are indicative, at the time of actual purchase GST at 3 per cent will be applied on the said amount along with making charges as decided by the jeweller. Making charges depend on the design and can range between Rs 3,000 and Rs 15,000 per 10 grams.
