Mumbai, July 8: Spot gold prices in India today fell Rs 1,360 to Rs 1,45,250 per 10 grams for 24 karat gold (99.9% purity), against Rs 1,46,610 reported on Tuesday’s close. Meanwhile, the price of 22 karat gold (91.6% purity) today dropped Rs 1,250 to Rs 1,33,140 per 10 grams from Rs 1,34,390 on Tuesday. Similarly, 18 karat gold prices today slipped Rs 1,030 to Rs 1,08,930 per 10 grams against Rs 1,09,960 reported on Tuesday.

The Wednesday price fall takes gold further away from highs hit between Friday and Monday’s close, during which gold prices had surged by close to Rs 6,000 for 10 grams of 24 karat gold. The sharper correction suggests that profit-booking accelerated after Tuesday’s weaker close, although jewellers continue to state that underlying demand from retailers and buyers stepping up purchases during the wedding season has not deterred despite gold posting a two-day decline.

Bullion on the local market today tracked weaker cues from global markets, where a firmer U. S. dollar and a decline in safe-haven demand from investors played on investors minds amid easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. This caused investors to book profits after two straight days of strong gains. Analysts expect gold to continue facing two-way volatility over the near term as markets react to upcoming U.S. economic data points, although the broader medium-term trend for gold remains constructive to most market observers and dips will continue to attract buying interest from long-term investors as well as central banks.

After Chennai, Delhi was the next expensive market to buy gold in India today. Delhi quoted a price of Rs 1,45,400 for 24 karat gold, Rs 1,33,290 for 22 karat gold and Rs 1,09,080 for 18 karat gold for 10 grams, at a Rs 150 premium over national prices for 24K gold. This Rs 150 premium has persisted over the last few sessions.

At the time of actual purchase, GST at 3 per cent will be charged along with making charges as quoted by the jeweller. Making charges is usually between Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000 per 10 grams, depending on the complexity of the design and the retailer’s discretion.
