Mumbai, June 8: Gold prices in India fell sharply at the start of the new week on Monday, even as renewed military exchanges between Israel and Iran over the weekend kept geopolitical tensions elevated.

The national price of 24-karat gold (99.9% purity) declined to ₹1,52,720 per 10 grams, shedding ₹3,380 from Friday’s ₹1,56,100. The 22-karat rate (91.6% purity) fell to ₹1,39,990 per 10 grams, down ₹3,100 from Friday’s ₹1,43,090. The 18-karat price (75% purity) eased to ₹1,14,540 per 10 grams, retreating ₹2,530 from Friday’s ₹1,17,070. On a per-gram basis, 24K gold now stands at ₹15,272, 22K at ₹13,999 and 18K at ₹11,454.

Monday’s steep ₹3,380 decline in 24K is the sharpest single-session fall in several weeks and comes despite a weekend of renewed hostilities in the Middle East a reminder that domestic gold pricing is not always in lockstep with geopolitical developments. Israel launched fresh strikes in the Beirut area on Sunday, Iran retaliated with a missile salvo targeting Israeli positions, and Brent crude jumped more than 2% back above $95 a barrel in early Monday trade.

Historically, such escalations tend to revive safe-haven buying in gold, which benefits whenever fears of a broader regional conflict intensify. However, Monday’s price direction suggests that a stronger US dollar and some profit-taking at recent elevated levels are outweighing the geopolitical bid for now. President Trump insisted over the weekend that the exchanges would not derail the US-Iran peace talks, saying he “calls all the shots” a statement that may have moderated the market’s risk-off response.

City-Wise Gold Rates: Southern and Western India

Chennai quoted 24-karat gold at ₹1,54,900 per 10 grams, 22-karat at ₹1,41,990 and 18-karat at ₹1,19,090 on Monday each well below Friday’s levels, though maintaining the structural premium over the national benchmark that Tamil Nadu’s bullion market has held consistently. Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala and Pune were all uniformly pegged at the national benchmark of ₹1,52,720 for 24-karat, ₹1,39,990 for 22-karat and ₹1,14,540 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams.

Delhi quoted 24-karat gold at ₹1,55,900 per 10 grams, 22-karat at ₹1,40,140 and 18-karat at ₹1,16,980 a notable premium above the national benchmark, wider than usual and likely reflecting stronger institutional demand in the capital. Vadodara and Ahmedabad were both quoted at ₹1,55,800 for 24-karat, ₹1,40,040 for 22-karat and ₹1,16,880 for 18-karat gold per 10 grams. Across all cities, Monday’s uniform and steep declines confirm the move was driven by macro forces rather than any city-specific factor.
