New Delhi, September 16: The Indian government, along with the Income Tax Department, has announced that they have extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 by one day. Now, entities can file their ITR by today, September 16. This comes after it was announced that yesterday would be the last day for ITR filing and it will not be extended. However, the income tax portal saw numerous glitches yesterday, forcing the government to extend the deadline by one more day.

More Than 7.2 Crore ITR Filed

According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), more than 7.3 crore ITRs were filed by September 15, surpassing last year’s record of 7.28 crore. However, as traffic surged on the last day, the ITR portal saw technical glitches and taxpayers were unable to login or complete their filings.

“To facilitate further filings of ITRs, the due date has been extended by one day (16th September 2025),” CBDT said in a post on X.

Consistent Technical Glitches

The Income Tax Department acknowledged that there was heavy traffic on the portal on the last day, which prompted them to share some troubleshooting steps late on Monday, requesting users to try different browsers, or clear their cache. However, even after trying the troubleshooting steps, many users reported that they were still unable to login or use various features of the portal.

In its response, the Income Tax Department requested users who are facing issues to share their details, along with their PAN and mobile number at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in. For AIS/TIS-related concerns, taxpayers were requested to send details including mobile number and public IP address to cmcpc_support@insight.gov.in.

Now, the date has been extended by one more day with CBDT communicating that the portal will remain under scheduled maintenance from 12:00 am to 2:30 am on September 16.
