New Delhi, Nov 17, 2025: The Government of India has moved certain platinum jewellery components from the ‘Free’ to the ‘Restricted’ import category with immediate effect. The restriction, aimed at tightening controls on specific platinum jewellery parts, will remain in force until April 30, 2026.

Import Policy Changed for Platinum Jewellery

According to the recent notification from DGFT, such platinum jewellery items would henceforth require importers to apply for a licence before bringing them into the country. The revised policy applies only to a few varieties of unstudded platinum jewellery that were allowed to be imported freely so far.

Similar Limitations Imposed on Silver Jewellery

Back in September, the government had also placed restrictions on imports of select silver jewellery pieces, a measure that remains in effect until March 31, 2026. The move aims to curb the inflow of silver being routed into India through unstudded jewellery from Thailand. Under India’s free trade agreement with ASEAN—of which Thailand is a member—such products enjoy duty-free access, raising concerns about potential misuse of the trade pact.

Reason for the Restrictions

The latest move is aimed at halting imports routed through certain channels and ensuring pacts are not misused to avoid the regulations. Authorities would use the new rules to block misclassification and monitor the imports of precious metals closely. Importers in these sectors must get permission from the DGFT before embarking on shipments.
