Mumbai, July 1: Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose 13.9% to about Rs 1.95 lakh crore in June, government data showed on Wednesday. Gross collections from domestic transactions were up 6.5% to about Rs 1.35 lakh crore, while import revenues rose a sharp 34.6% to Rs 60,038 crore, reflecting stronger overseas trade flows during the month.

Total GST refunds rose 29.1% year-on-year to Rs 32,436 crore in June. Domestic refunds increased 42.9% to Rs 17,767 crore, while refunds of GST paid on imports rose 15.6% to Rs 14,669 crore. After adjusting for refunds, net GST collection grew 11.2% to over Rs 1.62 lakh crore during the month, according to Press Trust of India report.

The June print marks a sharp pickup from May, when gross GST collection had stood at Rs 1.94 lakh crore, a more modest 3.2% rise over a year earlier, weighed down by a high base created by a one-time telecom spectrum payment in May 2025. Net of refunds, May revenue was Rs 1.67 lakh crore, up 3.3%. April, meanwhile, had set an all-time high, with gross GST collections touching around Rs 2.42 lakh crore, the highest-ever monthly mop-up on record, driven by strong year-end filings and sustained economic momentum at the start of the financial year.

On a cumulative basis, gross GST collections for the first quarter of FY27, covering April to June, rose 8.4% to Rs 6.32 lakh crore, while net GST collections increased 7.1% to Rs 5.40 lakh crore, PTI reported citing government data. The quarter’s numbers suggest indirect tax buoyancy has held up reasonably well despite sharp month-to-month swings between the record April print and May’s slower, base-effect-driven growth.

The next meeting of the GST Council is likely to build on the “process reforms” taken up in the previous session, aimed at easing compliance costs for businesses, simplifying registration processes, reducing litigation and addressing inverted duty structure (IDS) issues across sectors, Moneycontrol said, citing officials. The next Council meeting is expected in late July or August.
