Bengaluru, June 26, 2025 — Hitachi Energy India Limited (NSE: POWERINDIA, BSE: 543187) has won a big order for ₹647 crore (about $80 million) from the Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) to deliver 30 units of 765 kV, 500 MVA single-phase transformers. This contract is part of the 7TR-13-BULK tender package.

These cutting-edge 765 kV transformers use natural ester insulating fluid instead of mineral oil. Natural ester is biodegradable, self-extinguishing, and safer and more reliable than mineral oil. This project is part of a statewide effort to improve the grid infrastructure to serve the rapidly growing renewable energy sector and add high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technologies for efficient long-distance transmission.

Strategic Order to Support Grid Modernisation

The project that was awarded comprises the delivery of modern ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transformers that would help India improve its ability to transmit electricity. The company’s press release says that these 765 kV transformers will be able to send enough electricity to power 30 million homes once they are installed.

The deal shows that HIT India’s order book is still strong. It recently reached ₹19,246 crore, which is the greatest backlog it has ever had. This was made possible by outstanding performance in Q4FY25 (23% YoY revenue growth and ₹246 crore PAT) and strategic investments as part of its ₹2,000 crore 5-year India expansion plan. This order strengthens Hitachi Energy’s position in building a strong, sustainable, and future-ready national grid as India speeds up its energy transition to 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Utilities are moving away from project-based planning and toward long-term program-based strategies in response to rising electricity demand caused by industrial electrification and the use of renewable energy.

“From a technology provider perspective, this shift helps us plan capacity investments, reserve supply chains, and ensure timely delivery,” said N Venu, Managing Director & CEO, Hitachi Energy India. “We bring both global innovation and local expertise to support mission-critical, nation-building projects.”

Technical Specifications and Local Manufacturing Commitment

The high-capacity 765 kV transformers enable bulk power transmission over long distances with minimal losses, reducing both land usage and operating costs. These assets are slated for production at Hitachi Energy India’s power transformer facility in Maneja, Vadodara, Gujarat, reaffirming the company’s commitment to the “Make in India” initiative.

Order Details:

Parameter Specification
Quantity 30 Units
Rating 765 kV, 500 MVA
Type Single-Phase Transformers
End Client Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd
Manufacturing Location Maneja Factory, Vadodara, Gujarat
Application National Grid Expansion

Industry Shift and Technological Milestones

India’s need for power transformers has grown by 15% every year for the past two years. This is because renewable energy sources are being used more quickly and heavy industries and transportation networks are becoming electrified. Hitachi Energy has also successfully tested the world’s first 765 kV/400 kV single-phase 250 MVA transformer filled with biodegradable ester oil. This makes the environment safer and the transformer more reliable.
