Nifty ends marginally positive despite strong global cues and a sharp fall in crude prices
After yesterday’s profit-booking, the Nifty resumed its uptrend, gaining 9 points to close at 24,624. Notably, the index saw a more than 50-point spike in the closing auction session (CAS). NSE cash market volumes were higher by 5% as compared to yesterday.
Among Nifty 50 constituents, Shriram Finance, Grasim, and JSW Steel led the gainers, while TCS, Apollo Hospitals, and HCL Tech were the key laggards.
Sectoral performance was a mixed bag. Metal, Auto, and Realty ended with the biggest gains, while Media, Private Banks, and FMCG were among the top losers.
Midcap indices outperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 rising 0.18% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 advancing 0.76%. Market breadth turned positive, with the BSE advance-decline ratio at 1.20, indicating renewed buying interest in the midcap and smallcap space after yesterday’s mild profit booking.
The Indian rupee trimmed its morning gains and finally settled higher by 26 paise at 95.12. The unchanged policy rate by the central bank, a strengthening US dollar, and a rebound in crude oil prices collectively weighed on the rupee at higher levels.
The index continues to trade above all key moving averages, confirming bullish momentum. Immediate resistance is placed near 24,770, which coincides with the 200-day SMA, while support is seen at 24,377, aligned with the 200-day EMA. A decisive breakout above 24,770 could open the door toward 24,900–25,000, while a fall below 24,377 may trigger short-term consolidation toward 24,200.
