Mumbai, July 27: Shares of IDFC First Bank surged as much as nearly 10% on Monday after the private-sector lender reported a record quarterly profit of 1,075 crore for the June quarter, prompting brokerages to raise their target prices on the stock. The strong earnings performance boosted investor sentiment and helped the bank’s shares outperform the broader market, with investors focusing on the improvement in profitability and the lender’s operating performance.

The stock’s sharp move came after the bank posted a 132% year-on-year jump in net profit for the first quarter of the financial year. Profit after tax stood at 1,075 crore, compared with 463 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The result marked the lender’s highest-ever quarterly profit and underscored the significant improvement in its earnings profile.

Net Profit More Than Doubles From Year Ago

The sharp rise in profitability was a key positive for investors, particularly as private-sector lenders have remained under close scrutiny over their margins, credit costs and asset quality.

IDFC First Bank’s net profit more than doubled from the year-ago period, reflecting stronger operating performance and an improvement in the overall earnings trajectory. The record profit also provided investors with greater confidence that the bank is making progress in strengthening its financial performance.

The June-quarter numbers come against a backdrop of heightened focus on the ability of banks to maintain profitability while navigating changes in interest rates and competitive pressures in the lending market. The strong profit growth from IDFC First Bank offered a positive signal to the market and helped drive buying interest in the stock.

Net Interest Income Rises 21%

The bank’s core interest income performance was another major highlight of the quarter. Net interest income increased 21% year-on-year, indicating continued growth in the lender’s underlying banking operations.

Growth in net interest income is closely watched by investors as it reflects the difference between the interest a bank earns on loans and investments and the interest it pays on deposits and other borrowings.

The improvement in NII, alongside the sharp increase in net profit, strengthened the market’s view that IDFC First Bank’s earnings recovery is gaining traction. Investors will now watch closely whether the bank can maintain the pace of growth in its core income while managing funding costs and protecting margins in the coming quarters.

Brokerages Raise Target Prices

The strong quarterly performance also prompted brokerages to become more constructive on the stock, with several analysts raising their target prices following the earnings announcement.

The upgrades reflected improved expectations around the bank’s earnings trajectory and the potential for continued growth in profitability. The record quarterly profit provided a stronger base for analysts to reassess their forecasts, while the increase in net interest income reinforced expectations of sustained improvement in the lender’s core operations.

The positive brokerage commentary added to the buying momentum in the stock, helping IDFC First Bank shares rise sharply during Monday’s session.

IDFC First Bank Stock Outperforms Broader Market

The sharp gains in IDFC First Bank came as Indian equities recovered from a difficult previous week. The Nifty 50 and Sensex had fallen sharply in the five sessions leading up to Monday, weighed down by elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and selling pressure in several heavyweight stocks.

The broader market, however, found some relief on Monday as global risk sentiment improved following a pause in US-Iran hostilities and a sharp decline in oil prices. Lower crude prices eased some concerns over inflation and the potential impact of higher energy costs on the Indian economy.

Against this backdrop, IDFC First Bank’s strong quarterly numbers provided an additional stock-specific catalyst, allowing the lender’s shares to significantly outperform the broader market.

Investors Focus On Sustainability Of Earnings Growth

Following the sharp rally, investors are likely to focus on whether the bank can sustain the improvement in profitability through the rest of the financial year. The ability to grow its loan book while maintaining healthy margins, controlling costs and preserving asset quality will remain key factors influencing the stock’s performance.

The bank’s record June-quarter profit has nevertheless strengthened the case for a more positive view on its earnings outlook. The combination of strong profit growth, higher net interest income and upward revisions to brokerage target prices has provided a fresh boost to investor sentiment.

For now, the sharp rise in IDFC First Bank shares signals that the market has responded positively to the lender’s latest results. The focus will now shift to whether the record quarterly performance marks the beginning of a sustained improvement in earnings or whether investors will need to see further evidence in the coming quarters before the stock’s recent gains can be justified.
