Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has reaffirmed India’s commitment to achieving its $5 trillion economy target by 2027, citing strong economic fundamentals and decisive leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Goyal described the past decade of reforms as “transformational rather than incremental,” emphasizing that the country is prepared to navigate global volatility with unity and purpose. “We are well on track to achieve the USD 5 trillion economy goal in the next three years. This will be the first milestone on our journey to ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047,” Goyal stated.
From Fragile Five to Top Global Performer
Goyal highlighted India’s ascent from being part of the ‘Fragile Five’ to now among the world’s top five economies. This shift, he said, has been powered by:
- Record foreign exchange reserves nearing USD 698 billion
- A resilient banking sector
- Inflation remaining among the lowest in post-independence India
Goyal contrasted India’s current stability with past political turmoil like the 1975 Emergency, underscoring the country’s readiness to lead in a shifting global order.
FTAs with Advanced Economies to Boost MSMEs and Exports
Goyal also spotlighted India’s strategic push on free trade agreements with developed economies like the UK, Australia, and the European Union. According to him, these FTAs are aimed at creating “complementary relationships” that open doors for Indian exporters and MSMEs. “The FTAs we are signing are not with weak or competing economies but with advanced markets,” he said, urging startups and exporters to capitalize on these global opportunities.
AI and Tech-Driven Future: India Ready to Lead
Turning to the transformative potential of technology, Goyal emphasized India’s readiness to lead in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and 3D printing. He dismissed fears over job losses, urging focus on new employment opportunities through innovation. “Our youth are aspirational, and the government is working with industry bodies like NASSCOM to build AI skills,” he noted.
Inclusive and Honest Growth Model
Goyal reaffirmed that the government is focused on building an economy that’s inclusive, sustainable, and transparent. He also appreciated Prime Minister Modi’s hands-on approach to public welfare, highlighting how swiftly Indian citizens were evacuated from conflict zones like Ukraine and Iran.
He called on Indian businesses to scale up operations, enter new markets, and focus on innovation-led exports. “This is a virtuous cycle scale leads to competitiveness, which in turn fuels exports and prosperity,” he concluded, reinforcing that India’s growth story is a collective national effort.
With these efforts, Goyal affirmed that India is not just navigating global turbulence but positioning itself to become a global economic powerhouse.
