Mumbai, 29 October 2026: India VIX fell 0.33 points, or 2.03%, to 15.98 as of 10:02 AM IST on Thursday, against its previous close of 16.25, with the decline recorded amid a broadly flat opening in Indian equity benchmarks. The movement came as global markets weighed the United States Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, elevated crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and mixed signals from Asian markets. India VIX opened at 16.24, reached an early high of 16.57 and touched a low of 15.55, according to the available market data.
India VIX Falls 2.03% to 15.98 as Indian Markets Open Flat
India VIX stood at 15.98 at 10:02 AM, down from the previous close of 16.25. The index opened at 16.24 on Thursday, with its early trading range extending between 15.55 and 16.57. These figures show the index’s movement during the available morning trading period, while the wider market opened with limited changes in benchmark values.
The Nifty 50 opened at 22,690.65, declining 0.04%, while the Sensex began the session at 73,268.47, gaining 0.03%. The benchmarks therefore recorded marginally different opening movements, with neither showing a substantial gap in either direction. Ten of the 16 major sectors advanced, while the mid-cap and small-cap indices gained 0.2% at the open.
The relatively stable benchmark opening coincided with a decline in India VIX. However, the volatility index measures expected fluctuations in the Nifty over approximately the next 30 calendar days, based on Nifty index-option prices. Its movement is therefore distinct from the immediate direction of the benchmark indices.
India VIX Trades Between 15.55 and 16.57 During Early Session
The early trading data placed India VIX within a range of 15.55 to 16.57, following its opening at 16.24. By 10:02 AM, the index had moved down to 15.98, representing a decline of 2.03% from the previous close of 16.25. The index’s year-to-date return stood at 68.57%, while its 52-week range extended from 8.72 to 28.90.
The daily range provides the immediate context for Thursday’s movement, while the 52-week figures show the broader span recorded over the preceding year. The decline in the morning session should be distinguished from the index’s cumulative year-to-date performance, as the two figures cover different periods.
The available technical assessment classified the daily trend as neutral. Classic pivot levels placed the central pivot at 16.38, with resistance levels at 17.23, 18.20 and 19.05, and support levels at 15.41, 14.56 and 13.59. Fibonacci calculations identified resistance at 17.08, 17.51 and 18.20, with support at 15.69, 15.26 and 14.56. These levels were calculated using the previous trading day’s price range.
Fed Holds Rates at 3.75%-4% as Inflation Uncertainty Persists
The US Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75%-4% on Wednesday, 28 October, ahead of Thursday’s Indian market session. The decision followed a policy assessment in which inflation remained elevated and further economic data was awaited. Policymakers were also reported to be delaying changes to borrowing costs until after the following week’s US midterm elections.
The decision provided an important overnight development for global markets. The absence of an immediate rate change was accompanied by continuing uncertainty about inflation and the timing of subsequent monetary policy decisions. Changes in US interest rate expectations can also influence the dollar, global financial conditions and capital flows to emerging markets, including India.
Wall Street closed higher on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones gaining 0.19%, the S&P 500 rising 0.28% and the Nasdaq Composite advancing 0.27%. These gains provided a positive backdrop ahead of the Indian opening, although the broader global picture also included uneven reactions to corporate earnings and concerns about the outlook for technology companies.

Brent Crude Stays Above $114 Despite Diplomatic Relief
Brent crude futures eased during Thursday’s morning trading as renewed diplomatic efforts to address the Middle East conflict offered some relief over potential supply disruptions. Brent was reported at approximately $114.48 per barrel, down around 0.73%, while West Texas Intermediate crude traded near $101.94, declining approximately 0.82%.
Despite the declines, Brent remained above $114 per barrel, keeping energy prices central to the domestic market backdrop. India’s dependence on imported crude makes oil prices relevant to imported inflation, the current account, currency movements and operating costs across sectors such as aviation, paints, chemicals and logistics.
Developments in the Middle East remained another source of uncertainty. Reports described renewed diplomatic efforts, including attempts to revive US-Iran negotiations, alongside continuing concerns about regional energy supplies and the possibility of further escalation. The easing in crude prices therefore occurred alongside unresolved geopolitical risks.
These developments formed part of the international backdrop to Thursday’s opening. However, the available information does not establish that crude oil or geopolitical developments directly caused the observed decline in India VIX.
Rupee Pressure and Q2 Results Keep Domestic Developments In Focus
Currency movements and the domestic corporate earnings calendar added further context to the opening session. The rupee had closed at ₹95.28 against the US dollar on Wednesday, weakening by 21 paise from Tuesday’s close. The reported factors included dollar strength and elevated crude prices. This exchange-rate figure relates to the previous session and does not establish a fresh rupee movement during Thursday’s opening minutes.
The domestic earnings calendar also included several companies scheduled to announce their second-quarter financial results for the financial year 2026-27. These included Coal India, Asian Paints, InterGlobe Aviation, commonly known as IndiGo, Trent, Laurus Labs and Ambuja Cements.
Quarterly results can introduce company-specific developments into the market, with the broader index affected when results influence major constituents. However, the scheduled announcements alone do not establish a particular direction for India VIX.
Before the opening bell, GIFT Nifty indications were reported in a range of approximately 22,708 to 22,767, depending on the publication and timestamp. The readings pointed towards a muted start rather than a substantial gap in either direction, consistent with the limited movement recorded by the domestic benchmarks at the open.
Asian Markets and Alphabet Earnings Add to Global Uncertainty
Asian equity markets delivered mixed signals on Thursday morning. Japan’s Nikkei was reported to have gained 1.08%, while South Korea’s Kospi advanced 0.75%. The Kosdaq, however, declined 2.71%, reflecting the uneven performance across regional markets.
Technology earnings also contributed to the global backdrop. Alphabet shares fell approximately 10% in after-hours trading following a quarterly sales shortfall and concerns about substantial cash expenditure. Microsoft shares, meanwhile, rose, illustrating the differing market reactions to major technology companies’ results.
These developments were relevant to the wider international market environment, including the outlook for technology valuations and global risk conditions. Indian information technology companies can also be affected by developments involving major US technology businesses, although the available information does not establish a direct link between Alphabet’s share-price movement and India VIX during Thursday’s opening session.
October History Shows India VIX Positive in Nine of 18 Years
Historical seasonality data showed that India VIX recorded positive returns in nine out of 18 years during October. The index’s average October change was -0.45%, with the maximum positive change of 26.73% recorded in 2020 and the maximum negative change of -30.99% recorded in 2013.
Among years with positive October returns, the average positive change was 12.77%. Among years with negative returns, the average decline was 13.66%. These historical figures describe the index’s past October performance and do not determine its movement on 29 October 2026.
India VIX stood at 15.98 at 10:02 AM IST on 29 October 2026, down 2.03% from its previous close of 16.25. The opening session coincided with a flat start for domestic benchmarks, elevated crude prices, an unchanged US Federal Reserve rate and mixed global equity signals. The available figures establish the morning movement but do not quantify the individual contribution of each event.
