Mumbai, 28 October 2026: India VIX rose 0.42 points, or 2.56%, to 16.83 by 10:11 am IST on Wednesday, after opening at 16.40, equal to its previous close. The index moved between 15.54 and 17.36 during the session so far, as Indian shares opened lower amid higher crude oil prices and uncertainty ahead of the United States Federal Reserve’s policy decision. The anticipated Jio Platforms market debut was another domestic event in focus.

India VIX Gains 2.56% as Trading Opens

India VIX stood at 16.83, up 0.42 points (2.56%), at 10:11 am IST on 28 October. It opened at 16.40, the same as its previous close, before trading within a day range of 15.54–17.36. Its 52-week range was 8.72–28.90, while the year-to-date return shown for the index was 77.53%. The latest reading confirms that the volatility index was higher than its previous close during the early session. The index can rise or fall independently of the headline equity direction, as it is derived from option prices and reflects expected volatility.

The recorded low of 15.54 was below the open, while the high of 17.36 was above it. This is a snapshot as of 10:11 am, not a closing value. India VIX measures volatility implied by Nifty options, rather than the direction of the Nifty alone.

Crude Oil Climbs Above $115 After Saudi Refinery Report

Crude oil was a key external development during the opening session. Brent crude futures were reported up 1.3% at $115.36 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose 1.22% to $101.12. The gains followed reports that Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis said they had struck Saudi Arabia’s largest oil refinery. Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the reported strike.

The report renewed concerns about supply disruption amid the wider regional conflict. Higher crude prices can affect India’s oil import bill and inflation outlook, while increasing costs for oil-sensitive industries. Morning reports identified the rise in crude as a factor weighing on domestic equities.

Fed Decision Adds Uncertainty to the Opening Session

Indian shares opened lower ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision. The upcoming announcement put interest-rate expectations, US bond yields and the dollar in focus during the morning session. The policy decision had not yet taken place at the time of the early market reports, so its eventual outcome was not a cause of the opening move.

Changes in US rate expectations can influence global financial conditions and emerging-market assets. Reports described positioning ahead of the announcement, while US equity futures were largely flat. In the previous US session, the S&P 500 rose 0.6% and the Nasdaq 1.2%.

Nifty and Sensex Open Lower as Thirteen Sectors Fall

At 9:15 am IST, the Nifty 50 fell 0.32% to 22,678, while the Sensex declined 0.47% to 73,253.44. Thirteen of 16 major sectors were lower. Mid-cap shares lost 0.4%, while small-cap shares were broadly flat. Indian information technology shares fell 2.3%, making them the weakest major sector in the opening report.

The lower index opening coincided with India VIX standing above its previous close by 10:11 am, though the figures do not establish that the market fall alone caused the change. Bajaj Auto rose approximately 3%, while Larsen & Toubro gained 4.2% following earnings-related developments.

Rupee and Asian Markets Provide a Mixed Global Picture

The rupee was expected to open marginally weaker, tracking losses among Asian currencies ahead of the Fed decision. This was an opening expectation, not a confirmed full-session outcome, and coincided with crude above $115 a barrel.

Asian equity markets were not uniformly weak. South Korea’s KOSPI rose nearly 6% in early reported trading, led by chipmakers after SK Hynix reported stronger-than-expected profit and positive demand expectations. Japan’s Nikkei gained around 0.7%, while Australia’s ASX 200 rose around 0.8%. US equity futures were reported near unchanged. The international picture was mixed as Indian markets opened lower.

Jio Platforms and Domestic Flows Remain In Focus

Jio Platforms’ anticipated market debut was another domestic focus, although the reports did not establish that it independently caused the early India VIX move.

Provisional institutional data for 27 October, the previous trading session, showed foreign portfolio investors buying approximately ₹4,240 crore of Indian equities, while domestic institutional investors sold around ₹1,250 crore. These figures relate to 27 October, not the opening minutes of 28 October.

The levels were calculated from the previous session’s range.

The average October change was −0.11%. These historical figures provide context and do not describe the outcome for October 2026.

As of 10:11 am IST on 28 October, India VIX was at 16.83, up 2.56% from its previous close of 16.40. The early session coincided with crude above $115, a lower opening for Indian benchmark indices and the approaching US Federal Reserve decision. The figures are an intraday snapshot, not the final reading for the day.
