Mumbai, 15th Oct 2026: India VIX up 0.07 (0.48%) to 14.70 at 10.00 a.m. IST on 15 Oct 2026 (previous close 14.63). It opened at 14.62 and traded between 14.06 and 14.87 during the session. The opening trade was against a mixed global backdrop with hotter than expected US inflation and weaker Asian equities, against gains in Indian IT stocks and lower crude.
India VIX Opens at 14.62 as Early Trading Lifts the Index to 14.70
India VIX opened at 14.62 on Thursday, just below its previous close of 14.63. It traded within a daily range of 1later traded in14.70 at 10.00 a.m. IST on Thursday, an increase of 0.48%.
The latest read shows a rise in the volatility index in the early session. The 52-week range was 8.72 to 28.90, and the YTD return was 54.22%.
India VIX is a measure of the market’s expected volatility in the Nifty 50 over the next 30 calendar days, derived from the prices of Nifty options. It’s a measure of the expected degree of price movement rather than the direction in which the Nifty 50 is expected to move.
Nifty Gains 0.27% as IT Stocks Offset Weakness Across Sectors
Indian equities opened higher despite the overnight gloom in global markets. The Nifty 50 was up 0.27% at 22,683.3 by 9.22 a.m. IST with the Sensex up 0.32%. The Nifty IT index was up around 1.5% as the sector continued to post strength following HCLTech’s earlier results.
However, the broader market displayed a different pattern. Nine of the 16 major sectors were trading lower, while small-cap and mid-cap stocks also weakened. The divergence between benchmark gains and wider market performance characterised the early session.
The IT sector’s advance supported the headline indices, while losses in several other sectors reflected the uneven market open. Against this backdrop, India VIX rose from 14.62 at the open to 14.70 by 10:00 a.m., even as the Nifty 50 traded higher.
US Inflation Reaches 3.7% As Asian Markets Record Sharp Losses
The overnight global backdrop included renewed concerns about United States inflation and interest rates. September headline consumer inflation in the US rose to 3.7% year-on-year, while core inflation increased 2.6% year-on-year and 0.3% month-on-month. The figures were reported above expectations, bringing Federal Reserve policy uncertainty back into focus.
Asian equity markets also recorded declines on Thursday. The MSCI Asia-Pacific share index fell 1.2%, Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined 1.3%, and South Korea’s KOSPI dropped 5.6%. Technology and artificial intelligence-related shares faced particular pressure amid concerns about valuations and the interest-rate outlook.
US equities had also closed lower on Wednesday. The S&P 500 declined 1.11%, the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.88%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.09%.
These developments formed part of the international market environment entering India’s opening session. At the same time, US Treasury yields retreated and the dollar weakened following comments from Federal Reserve officials that moderated expectations of immediate monetary tightening.
Crude Oil Near $105 Eases as West Asian Supply Risks Persist
Crude oil prices remained another important factor in the market backdrop on 15 October. Brent crude was reported near $105.01 per barrel during early trade, following earlier levels around $106 per barrel.
The decline came amid continuing uncertainty over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and possible disruptions associated with the conflict in West Asia. The combination of lower prices and persistent supply concerns kept energy-market developments relevant to Indian financial markets.
As a major oil importer, India is exposed to changes in crude prices through its import bill, inflation and current account. Currency movements also remained in focus, with the rupee having settled at ₹95.15 per US dollar on Wednesday.
Reports indicated that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had been intervening to support the currency, while the pullback in US Treasury yields provided some relief to the rupee’s pre-market outlook.
Foreign Selling Continues for 14 Sessions as Earnings Remain in Focus
Foreign portfolio investor (FPI) outflows remained a feature of the domestic market environment. Foreign investors had reportedly sold Indian equities for 14 consecutive sessions through Wednesday, taking year-to-date outflows to approximately $32.7 billion.
Corporate earnings also remained on the day’s schedule. Investors were monitoring quarterly results and updates from Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Nestlé India and HDFC Life Insurance. These companies span IT services, consumer goods and financial services, placing their results within the broader domestic earnings calendar.
Separately, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved a proposed 60.72% stake sale in IDBI Bank to Fairfax Financial Holdings for ₹52,878.08 crore. IDBI Bank shares were reported lower in early trade.
Canara Bank shares fell approximately 5% following its quarterly results, despite reports of improved asset quality and lower-than-expected provisions. These stock-specific developments added to the range of domestic events unfolding during the morning session.
