Mumbai, 30 October 2026: India VIX rose 0.18 points, or 1.19%, to 15.29 on Friday, October 30, as escalating Middle East tensions, sharp declines across Asian markets and weakness in several domestic sectors added to volatility during the trading session. The index opened at 15.11, against its previous close of 15.12, and moved between an intraday low of 14.47 and a high of 15.69. The reported reading at 3:36 PM IST stood at 15.29.

The increase came despite the Nifty 50 trading above 23,000 during the afternoon session. While information technology and pharmaceutical stocks recorded gains, several other sectors remained under pressure. India VIX’s year-to-date return stood at 61.29%, while its 52-week range was 8.72–28.90.

Strait of Hormuz Tanker Attack Raises Geopolitical Risks and Oil Supply Concerns

An attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz emerged as a significant international development on October 30, renewing concerns about the security of a major route for global crude oil transportation. The incident involved explosive devices attached to the vessel by a small boat, while responsibility for the attack remained unclear.

The development came amid continuing uncertainty surrounding the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, with concerns about possible disruptions to energy supplies across the Gulf region. Brent crude traded above $116 per barrel during the morning session, with other intraday reports placing prices close to $118. Oil prices also recorded an increase of approximately 2%.

Higher crude prices carry implications for India’s import expenditure, inflation outlook, currency and corporate operating costs. Aviation companies face exposure to higher fuel expenses, while paint and chemical manufacturers depend on petroleum-based inputs. Oil marketing companies and logistics businesses also face uncertainty surrounding fuel pricing, refining margins and transportation expenses.

The possibility of further disruptions to energy transportation routes added to the uncertainty surrounding international oil supplies during Friday’s session.

Asian Markets Slide as Kospi Falls Up to 5.5% and Nikkei Loses 2.9%

The weakness in US technology stocks extended into Asian markets on October 30, with several major regional indices recording substantial declines. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell approximately 2.1% to 2.9%, while South Korea’s Kospi declined approximately 3.5% to 5.5%. The Shanghai Composite dropped around 1.4%.

However, the regional performance was not uniformly negative. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng advanced approximately 1.5%, while Australia’s ASX 200 gained around 0.2% to 0.4%. These figures represented different reporting snapshots rather than simultaneous closing returns.

The weakness in Japan and South Korea was particularly prominent because both markets have substantial technology-sector exposure. Concerns surrounding artificial intelligence investments and technology valuations contributed to the declines, adding to the cautious international market environment during India’s trading session.

US Technology Sell-Off and AI Spending Concerns Extend Global Market Weakness

Concerns surrounding major US technology companies and their artificial intelligence expenditure remained another important international development. Developments involving Alphabet and Intel, alongside concerns about the broader technology-sector outlook, contributed to selling pressure in US equities.

Market concerns centred on the substantial capital expenditure commitments of technology companies and whether investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure would generate adequate returns. Uncertainty surrounding technology valuations and future cash flows also affected global equity-market performance.

The weakness extended into European trading, with the STOXX Europe 600 declining approximately 0.2%. At around 3:18 PM IST, US futures were also lower, with S&P 500 futures declining 1.1% and Nasdaq 100 futures falling 2.3%. The MSCI Asia Pacific and MSCI Emerging Markets indices were down approximately 1.2% and 1.4%, respectively.

The developments kept international technology valuations, global equity performance and emerging-market conditions in focus during Friday’s Indian trading session.

Bank Of Japan Holds Rates at 1.25% Amid Currency and Policy Uncertainty

The Bank of Japan (BoJ) maintained its benchmark interest rate at 1.25% on October 30, in line with market expectations. The decision came amid continued weakness in the Japanese yen and attention surrounding the country’s future monetary-policy direction.

International markets were monitoring expectations of further interest-rate adjustments and their implications for global borrowing costs, currency positioning and capital flows. The United States had also urged Japan to consider higher rates amid concerns about yen weakness.

Since the decision was in line with expectations, it did not represent an unexpected policy change. However, Japan’s monetary-policy direction remained part of the wider international developments influencing financial markets.

US Treasury Rally and Indian Bond Yields at 7.3837% Offer Contrasting Signals

Government bond markets recorded gains amid uncertainty in global equities. US Treasury bonds rallied as demand for safer assets increased, with the market heading towards its strongest monthly performance in nearly three years. The movement also coincided with a decline in US Treasury yields.

Domestic government bonds extended their gains during Friday’s session. At approximately 3:12 PM IST, India’s benchmark 10-year government bond yield stood at 7.3837%, slightly below Thursday’s level. It was also heading towards its first weekly gain in 11 weeks, following a decline of more than 9 basis points during the week.

These developments provided a contrasting picture against weakness in global equities and elevated crude oil prices.

Nifty Holds Above 23,000 As 10 Of 16 Major Sectors Decline

The Nifty 50 remained above 23,000 during the afternoon session, while the Sensex also traded higher. However, market participation remained uneven, with several sectors and broader-market segments recording declines.

Information technology, pharmaceuticals and healthcare stocks recorded strength. In contrast, FMCG, consumer durables, metals and cement remained under pressure. Several automobile, media, oil and gas and financial stocks also traded lower.

Midcap and smallcap indices had declined approximately 0.9% and 0.5%, respectively, in the morning market snapshot. Additionally, 10 of 16 major sectors were declining at that stage.

213 Companies Announce Quarterly Results as Earnings Add Stock-Specific Uncertainty

Prominent companies in focus included Reliance Industries, Jio Platforms, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Bharat Electronics, Indian Oil Corporation, Varun Beverages, Bank of Baroda, GAIL India, Dixon Technologies, PB Fintech, Delhivery, Max Healthcare and NTPC Green Energy.

The market was also assessing previously announced results. Trent and InterGlobe Aviation were among the notable gainers, while Coal India faced pressure after reporting a weaker-than-expected profit. The earnings calendar added company-specific developments to the day’s domestic market activity.
