Mumbai, 6 November 2026: India VIX climbed 1.21 points, or 7.77%, to 16.75 as of 10:05 IST on November 6, 2026, reflecting heightened volatility in the Indian equity market amid a sharp sell-off across global technology stocks and Asian markets. The volatility index opened at 15.58, equal to its previous close, before touching an intraday high of 16.93 and a low of 14.45 during the early trading session.
The movement came against the backdrop of steep declines on Wall Street, a significant fall in Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s KOSPI, and concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) valuations, crude oil prices and geopolitical developments. However, Indian benchmark indices displayed relative resilience at the opening, with the NIFTY 50, Sensex and Bank NIFTY registering marginally positive starts.
India VIX Climbs 7.77% to 16.75 as Early Volatility Increases
India VIX advanced from its opening level of 15.58 to 16.75, gaining 1.21 points as of 10:05 IST. The index recorded a session high of 16.93 and a low of 14.45, indicating a wide trading range during the early session. Its previous close stood at 15.58, meaning the index began the session unchanged before registering an upward movement.
The volatility index had a 52-week high of 28.90 and a 52-week low of 8.72. Its year-to-date return stood at 76.90%, indicating a substantial increase over the period. The latest movement also placed India VIX above its opening and previous closing levels, with the index registering a 7.77% increase by 10:05 IST.
India VIX measures the market’s expectation of volatility in the NIFTY 50 over the next 30 calendar days, based on NIFTY options prices. It reflects the implied volatility derived from options contracts and can move independently of the direction of the underlying equity index.
US Nasdaq Falls 5.52% as Technology Sell-Off Spreads Globally
A sharp decline across US technology stocks during Thursday’s trading session emerged as a major external development ahead of India’s November 6 market opening. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.52%, while the S&P 500 declined 4.36% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 3.44% on November 5.
The Nasdaq recorded its steepest single-day decline in approximately 19 months and entered correction territory. The sell-off followed concerns over potential regulatory scrutiny of the artificial intelligence industry after the US midterm election outcome, alongside questions surrounding the sustainability of large AI infrastructure and data-centre investments.
Weak Qualcomm results added pressure to semiconductor and technology stocks, while concerns over elevated valuations across AI-related companies contributed to the broader decline. Reports indicated that approximately US$3 trillion in S&P 500 market capitalisation was wiped out during the session.
The developments affected global equity sentiment ahead of Friday’s Asian trading session, placing technology valuations, semiconductor performance and the outlook for AI-related expenditure at the centre of market concerns.
KOSPI Falls 8.8% and Nikkei Drops 6.2% During Asian Trading
The weakness on Wall Street extended into Asian markets on November 6, with semiconductor stocks facing substantial pressure. South Korea’s KOSPI declined approximately 8.8%, triggering a circuit breaker amid the sharp market fall. Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped approximately 6.2%, while the MSCI Asia-Pacific index declined around 2.9%.
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix were among the semiconductor companies affected by the sell-off. The decline across these markets followed the weakness in US technology shares, particularly amid concerns over AI valuations and future investment spending.
The sharp movement in Asian equities formed an important part of the international market environment during India’s opening session. The developments coincided with an increase in India VIX during early trading, as the domestic market began the session against a backdrop of substantial losses across major Asian indices.
Crude Oil Recovers Towards US$99 Amid West Asia Tensions
Crude oil prices also featured among the external developments influencing the Indian market environment on November 6. Brent crude recovered towards US$99 per barrel during early Asian trading following a substantial decline earlier in the week. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also recovered, trading around US$91 per barrel.
Reports of fresh attacks and security concerns involving tankers in the West Asia region renewed concerns surrounding oil supplies and shipping activity. The recovery in crude prices brought attention back to India’s exposure to international energy markets, given its dependence on imported crude oil.
Higher crude prices have implications for India’s import expenditure, the domestic currency, inflation and corporate operating costs. The movement also came after the earlier decline in oil prices had supported the Indian equity market’s performance during the previous session.
GIFT NIFTY Signals Weak Start Before NIFTY Opens at 24,538.20
Ahead of the domestic market opening, GIFT NIFTY indicated a weaker start for Indian equities amid the overnight global sell-off. Pre-market observations placed GIFT NIFTY at 24,473.50 at 7:47 AM, around 24,426 at 8:30 AM, and 24,424.50 in another reported observation. These levels indicated a discount of approximately 126–174 points, depending on the observation and comparison basis.
However, the actual domestic opening was considerably more stable. The NIFTY 50 opened at 24,538.20, while the Sensex began trading at 79,413.66 and Bank NIFTY opened at 57,812.90. The NIFTY registered an opening gain of approximately 0.01%, while the Sensex and Bank NIFTY also began marginally higher.
In an early-session snapshot, the NIFTY was reported at 24,515.30, down approximately 0.09%, while the Sensex stood at 79,467.15, up approximately 0.19%. The domestic market’s opening performance contrasted with the substantial declines across US and Asian equities.
FII Buying of ₹14,974.68 Crore Follows Six-Day Market Rally
Domestic institutional positioning from the previous trading session remained relevant to the market backdrop on November 6. On November 5, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) recorded net purchases of ₹14,974.68 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) registered net sales of ₹10,444.54 crore in the cash market.
Foreign purchases were also reported at approximately US$1.6 billion, representing the largest single-day net inflow in nearly six years. The preceding ten trading sessions had also witnessed substantial foreign portfolio inflows.
The institutional activity followed a strong session for Indian equities on November 5. The Sensex gained 2.60%, the NIFTY 50 advanced 2.40%, and Bank NIFTY rose 3.33%. The NIFTY added approximately 576 points to close at 24,536.60, extending its winning streak to six consecutive sessions.
The contrasting FII and DII activity highlighted the difference in institutional cash-market positioning during the previous session, ahead of Friday’s trading.
US Jobs Data and Earnings Calendar Keep November 6 in Focus
The US non-farm payrolls report was scheduled for release later on November 6, making employment figures another important international economic event on the day’s calendar. The data was being monitored in the context of its potential implications for US employment conditions, Federal Reserve interest-rate expectations, Treasury yields and the dollar.
On the domestic corporate front, the September-quarter earnings calendar included Bosch, Siemens, Hindalco Industries, Voltas, Titan, Bharti Airtel, Gland Pharma, Jubilant FoodWorks, Blue Dart Express, Nuvama Wealth Management, Cholamandalam Financial Holdings and Aster DM Quality Care.
The combination of international economic data and domestic corporate results added to the list of scheduled developments during the trading session. These events were distinct from the overnight technology sell-off and Asian market declines that had already influenced the market environment before India’s opening.
November Seasonality Shows Negative Returns In 10 Of 18 Years
Historical seasonality data showed that India VIX had delivered negative returns in 10 out of 18 years during November. The index’s maximum positive monthly change was 21.46% in 2021, while its average positive change stood at 11.84%.
On the negative side, its maximum decline was 19.92% in 2020, with an average negative change of 7.82%. The historical average change for November stood at 0.92%.
The historical figures provide the monthly performance context for the volatility index. However, the November seasonality data represents observations across previous years and is separate from the specific developments recorded during the November 6 opening session.
India VIX stood at 16.75, up 7.77%, as of 10:05 IST on November 6, after opening at 15.58. Its session range was 14.45–16.93, against a 52-week range of 8.72–28.90. The day’s developments included the US technology sell-off, Asian equity declines, crude oil recovery, domestic market opening levels and scheduled economic and corporate announcements.
