Mumbai, October 20, 2025 – Indian stock exchanges NSE and BSE are open for normal trading today (Monday, October 20). But a special Muhurat trading will take place tomorrow, October 21, to mark the beginning of the new Samvat year, after which there will be a full market holiday on October 22 for Diwali Balipratipada.

Trading Schedule During Diwali 2025

The coming festive week sees a combination of regular timings, special trading sessions, and holidays:

  • October 20, Monday: Regular market hours on the NSE as well as BSE.
  • October 21, Tuesday: Muhurat Trading – a ceremonial one-hour session to mark the start of Samvat 2082.
  • October 22, Wednesday: Half day trading holiday for Diwali Balipratipada.

The schedule allows traders to enjoy the lucky Diwali session before markets are closed midweek.

Muhurat Trading Timings and Segments

The Muhurat session on October 21 will be between 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., and order changes are permissible up to 2:55 p.m.

The major segments — equities, derivatives, currencies, and commodities – will remain operational during this period. The session is symbolic, with traders and investors being asked to make the first benedictory trade of the new year.

What Is Muhurat Trading?

Muhurat trading is an age-old Diwali practice in Indian stocks, reflecting prosperity and good luck in wealth generation. The term “Muhurat” means auspicious time in Hindu astrology. Quality stocks are purchased by investors or token trades are executed as a courtesy to usher in new beginnings for Samvat 2082, the Hindu calendar year.

Remaining Stock Market Holidays in 2025

After Diwali Balipratipada, only two trading holidays are left in the NSE and BSE holiday schedules for this year:

  • November 5, 2025: Prakash Gurpurab
  • December 25, 2025: Christmas

Backdrop of Recent Market

Markets have come into the festival season on a positive note. The Nifty 50 closed the previous session at 25,709, while the Sensex closed at 83,952, carrying forward its three-week winning streak. The positive momentum is an indication of continuous investor confidence ahead of the Diwali Muhurat session.

Where to Verify the Holiday Calendar

Investors looking for official notice of trading times and market holidays can check the BSE and NSE websites, which update the holiday calendar and session timings from time to time.
