Mumbai, November 3: Indian equity benchmarks extended their winning streak to a fourth consecutive session on Tuesday, with the Nifty 50 reclaiming the 23,800 mark and the BSE Sensex surging more than 1,225 points. Broad-based buying across automobile, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), realty and private banking stocks lifted investor sentiment, supported by resilient corporate earnings, easing crude oil prices and signs of renewed foreign investor interest in domestic equities.
At close, the Sensex advanced 1,225.07 points, or 1.62%, to 76,917.85, while the Nifty 50 gained 370.05 points, or 1.58%, to settle at 23,810.85. The benchmarks have now risen for four consecutive sessions, gaining around 5% over the period and reaching their highest levels in nearly two months.
Market breadth remained positive, with 2,362 shares advancing, 1,862 declining and 156 remaining unchanged on the BSE.
Sectoral Indices: FMCG, Realty, Private Banks Lead Gains
Among sectoral indices, the Nifty FMCG index emerged as the top performer, rising 2.5%, followed by Nifty Realty, which gained 2.10%. Nifty Private Bank advanced 1.98%, while Nifty Auto climbed 1.7%. Nifty Bank added 0.8%, and Nifty Media rose 0.5%.
On the other hand, Nifty PSU Bank declined 1.4%, while Nifty Energy shed 0.4%.
The broader markets also ended higher but underperformed the benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap index gained 0.8%, while the Nifty Smallcap index rose 0.3%.
Top Gainers And Losers
Among Nifty 50 constituents, BSE Limited led the gainers, followed by Tata Consumer Products, Asian Paints, Bharti Airtel and Nestle India.
On the losing side, Infosys, State Bank of India (SBI), ONGC, Power Grid Corporation and Adani Enterprises were among the major laggards.
In the broader market, Marico surged 10% after reporting September-quarter earnings that exceeded analyst expectations, supported by lower copra costs and healthy demand. Textile and paper maker Trident also rallied 7% after posting a sharp increase in quarterly profit. KRBL and VRL Logistics were among other notable gainers following strong earnings announcements, rising 10.6% and 6% respectively.
Foreign Investor Buying, Softer Crude Support Sentiment
The latest rally has been underpinned by signs of foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) returning to Indian equities. Foreign investors were net buyers to the tune of Rs 3,115 crore on Monday, according to provisional NSE data, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) recorded net sales of Rs 392 crore.
Foreign investors had turned net buyers in four of the five sessions preceding Tuesday, signalling a possible improvement in overseas investor appetite for Indian equities. Analysts also pointed to relatively attractive valuations and improving earnings prospects as factors supporting the recovery.
Crude oil prices provided another source of relief. Brent crude had fallen around 7% in the previous session to approximately $105 a barrel, as diplomatic discussions involving Iran and Qatari mediators raised hopes of an end to the US-Israeli war with Iran. However, reports of fresh US strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island kept geopolitical risks in focus, while Brent subsequently recovered around 1%.
The Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar, closing 16 paise higher at 94.74 compared with its previous close of 94.90.
Going ahead, investors will track the trajectory of crude oil prices, developments in the Middle East, foreign fund flows and the ongoing September-quarter earnings season. The outcome of the US midterm elections will also remain on the global market radar.
