Mumbai, November 3: Indian equity markets witnessed broad-based buying on Tuesday, November 3, with 13 of the 16 major sectoral indices ending higher as the Sensex and Nifty extended their winning streak to a fourth consecutive session. FMCG, realty, private banking and automobile stocks led the advance, while financials emerged as the biggest contributors to benchmark gains. Strong September-quarter earnings, easing crude oil prices and signs of renewed foreign portfolio investor (FPI) buying further supported sentiment.
FMCG Stocks Lead Sectoral Gains
The Nifty FMCG index emerged as the best-performing sectoral gauge, rising 3.6% on Tuesday, as investors stepped up buying in consumer goods stocks. Marico was among the standout performers in the broader market, surging 10% after reporting September-quarter profit that exceeded analyst estimates, supported by lower copra costs and healthy demand.
The company’s strong earnings performance reinforced investor confidence in the consumption space. Other consumer-facing stocks also attracted buying interest, helping the FMCG index outperform the broader market. Biscuit maker Britannia Industries rose 6.4%, breaking its two session losing streak.
Realty Stocks Rally
The Nifty Realty index advanced 2.3%, emerging as the second-best-performing sectoral index of the session. The gains came amid the broader improvement in risk appetite, with investors increasing exposure to rate-sensitive and domestic economy-linked stocks. Lodha Developers rose 5.8% following upbeat management commentary after results.
Private Banks, Financial Stocks Drive Benchmark Gains
Banking and financial services stocks were among the biggest contributors to the benchmark rally. The Nifty Private Bank index climbed 1.98%, while the Nifty Bank index gained nearly 1%. The Nifty Financial Services index advanced 1.8%.
HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank were among the key contributors, rising 3.6% and 2.7%, respectively. Together, the two lenders account for nearly a fifth of the Nifty 50’s weight.
Analysts said valuations of private lenders had become more compelling even as their earnings outlook strengthened. They also raised FY27 forecast for Indian bank loan growth to 18% from 14%, providing an additional positive signal for the sector.
Auto Stocks Extend Gains; Media Also Ends Higher
The Nifty Auto index advanced 1.7%, extending the broader market recovery, while the Nifty Media index gained 0.5%. Automobile stocks participated in the rally as investors continued to favour domestic-facing businesses amid improving earnings sentiment. Auto parts maker Bosch climbed 3.2% after announcing plans to consider a bonus and stock split.
The broader positive trend also extended to cement stocks, which featured among the sectors attracting buying interest during the session.
PSU Banks, Energy Among Few Losers
On the other hand, the Nifty PSU Bank index declined 1.3%, emerging as the biggest sectoral laggard. The Nifty Energy index also ended lower, shedding 0.1%, despite the sharp correction in crude oil prices in the previous session.
Metals faced weakness, with investors favouring financials and domestic consumption-oriented sectors.
Broader Markets Participate In Rally
The broader markets ended higher but underperformed the frontline benchmarks. The Nifty Midcap index gained 0.8%, while the Nifty Smallcap index advanced 0.3%, indicating a degree of selectivity in buying even as the benchmark indices posted strong gains.
What Is Supporting Sectoral Buying?
The improvement in sectoral sentiment comes amid signs of foreign investors returning to Indian equities. FPIs were net buyers in four of the five sessions preceding Tuesday, while strong corporate earnings have helped improve the outlook for domestic equities.
Foreign investors were net buyers of Indian shares worth Rs 3,115 crore on Monday, against net sales of Rs 392 crore by domestic institutional investors (DIIs), according to provisional exchange data.
Crude oil prices have also eased from recent highs, with Brent falling around 7% in the previous session before recovering approximately 1% to $106 per barrel on Tuesday. The moderation in oil prices has provided some relief to sectors vulnerable to higher input costs and inflationary pressures.
Investors will continue to monitor the September-quarter earnings season, foreign fund flows, crude oil prices and developments in the Middle East for further sectoral cues.
