Mumbai, Sept 4: The Indian stock market will remain open on Friday, September 4, despite the Janmashtami festival. NSE and BSE have not included Janmashtami in their 2026 trading holiday calendar, allowing normal trading in equities and derivatives.

The situation is different for banks, with several states observing a holiday for the festival. However, a bank holiday does not automatically translate into a stock market holiday.

NSE, BSE Trading Today: What Investors Need to Know

Trading will follow the regular Friday schedule on September 4.

Segment Trading Hours
Equity 9:15 AM – 3:30 PM
Equity Derivatives 9:15 AM – 3:40 PM
Pre-open Session 9:00 AM – 9:15 AM

The Nifty 50 and Sensex will therefore remain available for trading during their regular market sessions.

Investors holding futures and options positions should also note that the derivatives segment will operate normally.

Why Is the Stock Market Open on Janmashtami?

The confusion largely comes from the difference between the RBI bank holiday calendar and the stock exchange holiday calendar.

Janmashtami is being observed as a bank holiday at several centres on September 4. NSE and BSE, however, have their own list of trading holidays, and September 4 does not feature on that list.

As a result, investors can trade as usual even though some physical bank branches may remain closed.

Is F&O Trading Open Today?

Yes. The equity derivatives segment will operate on its normal schedule today.

This means traders can take or exit positions in futures and options during the regular session. Any settlement-related requirements should still be checked against the applicable exchange and clearing schedules.

Is MCX Open Today?

Yes, commodity trading will also continue on September 4.

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) is scheduled to operate on Janmashtami, with trading available during its applicable sessions.

When Is the Next Stock Market Holiday?

The next scheduled NSE and BSE trading holiday is Monday, September 14, on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.

That will be the key market closure for September after today’s regular session.
