Eurozone Inflation Slows As Estimated
Eurozone inflation slowed in January due to the sharp fall in energy prices, final data from Eurostat showed Wednesday. The harmonized index of consumer prices rose 1.7 percent on a yearly basis in January, in line with estimate released on February 4. This followed December’s 2.0 percent increase. Excluding volatile prices of energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, core inflation slowed marginally to 2.2 percent from 2.3 percent a month ago. The figure matched the earlier estimate.
UK Public Inflation Expectations Fall in January, Citi/YouGov Survey Shows
The British public’s expectations for inflation over the coming year and further ahead fell sharply in February, according to a monthly survey by YouGov for U.S. bank Citi which was published on Wednesday. Short-term inflation expectations fell to 3.3% in February from 3.8% in January, while long-term expectations fell to 3.6% from 4.1%
Brazil’s Central Government Posts Lower-Than-Expected Primary Budget Surplus in January
Brazil’s central government started the year with a smaller-than-expected primary surplus as spending outpaced revenue growth, Treasury data showed on Wednesday. The government posted a primary surplus of 86.9 billion reais ($16.87 billion) in January, below the 88.8 billion reais forecast in a Reuters poll.
Expenditures rose 2.9% from a year earlier, while net revenue increased 1.2%, highlighting leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s challenge in balancing public accounts largely through revenue-raising measures
