Mumbai, May 5: Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Limited has taken a decisive step into shipyard development, acquiring around 15 acres of waterfront land at Saphale in Maharashtra, the company said in an exchange filing.

The deal, executed through its subsidiary Knowledge Shipyard Private Limited, also includes an option to expand by another 5 acres. The site sits along the Vaitarna River and is strategically located near the upcoming Vadhvan Port an advantage that could prove critical as India pushes to scale up its maritime infrastructure.

The land offers about 188 metres of waterfront access, a natural slipway and a high tide draft of roughly 6 metres features that are well suited for shipbuilding and repair operations.

Stock Market Snapshot

KMEW share price rose 4.20% to ₹2,121.70 in early trade, after opening at ₹2,052.60 and climbing to an high of ₹2,150.00. The sharp uptick suggests the market sees this not just as a land purchase, but as a meaningful strategic shift.

Unlike routine order wins, this is a long term asset creation move one that could reshape the company’s business profile over time.

More Than Land A Full Scale Shipyard Vision

KMEW isn’t just buying land and waiting. It has laid out a fairly ambitious plan.

The company intends to build a fully integrated, tech enabled shipyard with facilities for hull fabrication, mechanical and electrical work, and streamlined production systems. There’s also a focus on automation, energy efficiency and structured waste management signals that the company is thinking beyond basic infrastructure.

The rollout is expected to happen in phases:

  • Start with smaller vessels like workboats and tugs
  • Move into repair services and floating dry docks
  • Eventually scale up to larger vessel construction

If executed well, this could significantly expand KMEW’s capabilities from a marine services provider to a more integrated maritime player.

Why This Move Matters

India’s push for domestic shipbuilding and port led development is gaining momentum, backed by policies like Maritime India Vision 2030. KMEW’s entry into shipyard infrastructure aligns neatly with that broader trend.

Bottom Line

The market’s initial reaction is clearly positive, but the real value will depend on execution: how fast the shipyard comes up, how efficiently capital is deployed, and whether KMEW can attract meaningful orders.
